I don't understand the whole gotta have a sales guy in the mix.
I'm a lifetime friend of the chevy dealer handling my car & he informed the GM who is a swell fella of our history...my first visit back when M6 launch started was great & they hooked my up with a very solid sales guy who knew the biz/car. So, here I am today just to give the 411 on what I want to order & my regular guy is out. This GM hooks me up with a nice enough guy but sort of a ding-dong. GM also says owner buddy picked me up & left me a copy of the Car & Driver / ZL1 we saw mentioned here & leaves me with dingus. Sales guy had no idea Camaro was even offering a 650hp version & initially thought I was getting a vette. The GM had just Told him in front of me why I was there just to get on the front end of the radar & dingus takes my order request & is going to get a print out yet still comes back to tell me the system wouldn't accept my A10 order & then details how this initial step will go down?? Uh, I copy!! Why the manager couldn't take the 5-10mins to get the easy & basic order specs & keep another middle man out of this is sorta frustrating but I get it is some sort of protocol all dealerships follow to a degree using a salesman with every FTF with the customer?? Anyway, no big complaints & tickled with the attn received, just seems odd sometimes how dealerships do their gig. I have gotten more solid info here & nice to know I cannot be BS'd in any form of how this A10 is gonna be born. Many thanks to those in the know willing to share this solid 411 on the forum. This really helps a guy like me who have never dealt with a new model / desirable vehicle. |

I remember back when I had my 2012 ZL1 I pulled up to a light next to an R/T Challenger. (I'm assuming stock as it didn't sound like anything had been done to it.) The guy in it out of nowhere started loud mouthing me about my car and how it was slow and telling his friend in the passenger seat that he could smoke it. The light turned green and we went. I'm pretty sure you know how that ended. At the next light the guy's friend was loud mouthing him and giving him shit. I waved as I was about to turn. The other guy didn't return the favor. Moral of the story? Don't be a loud mouth prick in a stock R/T Challenger. That guy got his ass handed to him and his friend did the rest. As for issues with dealerships? When I bought the ZL1 (used) the guy added $10,000 to the price of the car and $10,000 to the amount on the trade in. Said it gave me more capital to negotiate with. Whatever that means... I had a 760 credit score and don't know why that would matter. I wasn't as great at dealing with sales guys/financing back then. I now check EVERYTHING before signing. But at the time the payment and all the math worked out for me (or so I thought) and my SS was giving me so many problems that I was just done with it. Yea yea... I should have done that with that car and not gotten ahead of myself. Now? I'm just an ass to the finance department when they try to BS me. Also, I do all of my negotiating over the phone/by email now. If they try to change something once I'm there, I walk out.

Before I bought my 5th Gen (first ones just hitting showroom floor) I went to a dealer to see if they had any in stock so I could see one in person. Salesman asks what I am looking for and I say Camaro ZL1 and salesman says they have 25 coming in.

Man this is painful, being a salesman and reading some of these stories makes me cringe.

This is fun and all. But let's keep in mind that in any field there are some individuals who are not as knowledgeable as they should be and sales is no exception. My salesman for the Firehawk I bought back in 99 did not have a clue and was unprofessional and I had to help him through the ordering process. He was fired by the dealer before the car arrived.
His replacement who took care of delivery was great. He had been selling Pontiacs for many years, knew what he was doing, knew all about Firebirds/Trans Ams/Firehawks and actually apologized for the inconvenience.

The salesman thinks this is an A10 automatic lol. The picture of the shifter alone answers the question.

This doesn't directly have to do with a Camaro although I was stopping by to look at few a couple of months back. My daily for the past 13 years has been a Colorado and the guy says hey nice S10, and this was a Chevy dealership.

Most salesmen (women) get a draw against commision at least when they're new to the business. The experienced salesmen rely on past customers for their living. The good ones read a lot of written material and go through the cars on the showroom and lot often. They know all the options and how they work. They also must be good with people skills. Selling someone a $40k+ car is tough for any sales person. Most "Car Guys" on this forum that have never sold a car before would have a tough time making a living selling cars. There are some that can really do well. A friend of mine in Houston, TX who has been in the business 20+ years averages $250k a year. Selling new cars has got to be really tough, that's why there is such a high turn-over.

My sales guy straight up told me I knew more about the zl1 than he did. Even told me to keep him updated if I found out any more which kinda made me laugh. He's a good guy who makes fair deals, bought from him before and will again so long as he is there.
Last summer I had my eye on a hellcat, went to the dealership and inquired with a brand new sales person, she referred me to a more senior salesperson since she had no knowledge about the car other than its existence. The guy just kinda looked at me and rolled his eyes. Prob thought I was too young or that I was looking for a quick joyride..oh well I moved on to something I like a lot more |
