Optional Long Tube Headers on the ZL-1

If the ZL-1 came with optional LT headers, would you get (order) them? At what cost? I would as long as they gave at least +15hp and were under maybe...$600.

They wouldn't as this car needs to be available in California. Long Tube headers are illegal in California due to the California Air Resources Board. =(

Actually,LT headers are illegal (other than off-road use) in every state in the union.

LT's require relocation of the cats, and that's a federal no-no. Having said that,it's rarely enforced. But if a comapny like GM decided to do it,I'm sure it would peak the interest of the folks at the EPA.

I guess if it would be offered by the manufacturer it would have gone through tests and would be validated with the cats in this position...

The relocating of the cats is only a problem for the aftermarket....

Wont this alteration support voided warranty if dealer wants to claim it?

How does moving the cats up a few inches alter emmissions anyway?

Headers on the stock LSA don't do much at all. And $600 is about a third of what they go for.

Plesae expand......

EVERY set of LT headers, and I mean literally every set, comes with a disclaimer that they are for OFF-ROAD use only. Look at the very bottom on the website of every vendor that sells LT's and you'll see the disclaimer.

And I reitierate what I said before......it's rarely enforced at the street level.

And I'm certainly not anti-headers. I have several cars with LT's and love em'.

I was just giving my opinion on why GM would never offer them as a factory option.

GM Charges like 500 bucks for a cold air intake. No way you'd get LTs for $600

.

I'd be intertested to see the numbers on LTs vs the factory dual mode exhaust. I might consider it aftermarket... after the warranty has fizzled.

Edit: My warranty will probably fizzle when I void it.

There is a reason that the cats are so far up on modern vehicles. The closer to the engine the cats are the faster they get to operating tempeture and the sooner they work. Cold start emission is the hardest thing to pass in the OEM world, cold start is where the majority of raw hydrocarbons are releasted. There will never be a factory vehicle from any manufacture for street legal use that comes from the dealership with Long Tubes. They are illegal from a emission stand point, it does not matter if a state checks for them it is illegal to remove or move cats from their OEM location.

Uhh long tube headers are not illegal in Arizona. As far as your comment about that disclaimer being on every website you should look closer.

http://www.americanracingheaders.com...oSS+V8_V6.html

The disclaimer is clearly marked for California only. It is illegal to drive a car without cats however replacing the stock cats with high flow ones is not illegal.
