In Florida that would actually violate the counterfeiting statute. You can not affix a badge, emblem, or label to something that it was not manufactured with. I have no problem with upbadging for personal use. It is their car, they can do what they want with it. However, it will be illegal to try and sell it that way without changing it back.

I have seen so many 69 Z/28's with front drum brakes, single exhausts, or 6 cyl that there are now more "z/28" than ever left the factory.
