to buy? loaded ss vs base corvette w/ big discount

now i'm really confused..went to the dealership today and w/ the big 6-7k discount on vette there is only 5-6k difference in cost. this was a base model w/ the better exhaust was like 45k. the ss i ordered is fully loaded w/ almost all options and is about 39-40k.. which car would u buy w/ this price difference? and keep in mind i oredered a fully loaded ss too..vette is base

Make a list of the options that you really want. Then, look what the base vette has and compare that to what a loaded SS offers. Then ask yourself: how bad do I want a sports car...right now? Keep in mind that the first year of a new model is likely going to need to have some bugs worked out...might matter to you, might not. What's the difference likely to be in insurance costs? Will you ever need a back seat?

The dealers here in the Detroit area had Vette verts available for $43,900 (supplier price three weeks ago). It was SO tempting considering the loaded 2SS/RS is gonna be over $39,000. I drove thru their lot today and they still have a huge selection of them. The cyber grey with the dark grey top and light grey interior was a killer. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

And as we speak some moron professor from the University of Maryland is telling the politicians at the hearings in Washington that the new auto companies in China have a better business model than the US manufacturers and is recommending the the feds not help the US manufacturers. GRRRRRR....yea...try buying a replacement part for the Chinese piece of garbage if it runs for 50,000 miles.....

You can actually get a base vette for right at $40k. Look at the sponsors on the corvette forum for those deals. I chose the Camaro because it's new and different. Plus, I grew up in Bowling Green KY so it's no big deal to see a vette. I'm sure the perfomance of the vette is quite a bit better. It's really just up to you and what you think you would be happier with.

I'd take the Vette personally. But depends on what you want. If the car is going to be your DD. Then I say Camaro 2SS.

I think this decision will finally boil down to practicality. Do you want a fast car or do you want a fast car that you can carry a passenger or to, do a lil grocery shopping with, put more than golf clubs in the back etc etc. In terms of performance with the base model there is really no difference.

My honest opinion would be go for the Camaro for versatility and the NEW x factor that it has.

Base Corvette:

5,000$ more, a few tenths better on 0-60, several tenths at the end of the quarter mile, two less seats, horsepower to weight ratio is better, targa top, If your my size (5'11) the car fits like a glove, hood flips backwards, car is smaller, base model with few options, possibly more agile, of course all of these stats depending on the driver, Small mods make the car go alot faster.(not totally sure on these numbers because I don't know crap about the base model, if any of the above is incorrect then disagree, i take it well)

SS Camaro:

5000$ Less, damn near comparable numbers, more cargo space, two extra seats, Interior ambient lighting , Fully loaded with every option, tons of speakers, Sunroof  The car is in reality damn fast, Hood flips normally, If your any size the car fits like a glove, Supposedly crazy handling ability, and you can get it in any badass color except for the two that I want! (darker shade of yellow, or an in between grey like my avitar) Small mods make the car go a little faster.

Hope this helps.

PS: I would probably go with the camaro on this one, but when you decide to go Z06 then you talk to me.

well desipite fact that I am a solid camaro lover just like much of people here. I must say go with the vette. If you dont need the backseat go vette all way. The camaro is very cool but at 4000lbs its to heavy. Vette all the way. My buddies 08 Ls3 vette m6 runs 12,30's @ 117.7 bone stock down to the air filter with 100 miles on it. They are very stout cars . Heck theres a video out there somewhere of a cam only Ls3 m6 vette runing 10.80 @ 128. The new camaro runs an ESTIMATED 13.10 @ 109 insh or something like that, no slouch by any means but when compared with same mottor in a much lighter car its kinda slow. But I do like the camaro, its very nice but Iam waiting on when they come out so I can see what they run in quarter and how they respond to mods before I make my choice.

Why not a used vette - gets rid of your price gap completely

^Okay, Then you got a used 1lt vette, which can be picked up for low 30s, sometimes high 20s. Or, if you really want a fast car a used Z06, which you might find one priced around, not at, I said around, your base 1lt vette. Either way camaro or vette, your getting a really nice car.

A Corvette Forum dealer offered a new 2008 Corvette 1LT with Z51 ($1295 option - same price as NPP exhaust) for $38,900. It took him almost a month to sell it at that price.

Or you could get a 2LT for just $1555 more. (adds side air bags, and other goodies).

Here's some other examples:

I've been debating this very same thing. My wife is leaning towards me getting the Vette over the Camaro. At the prices you can get now, it's hard not to give it serious consideration.

Yup...thats even driving me more nuts. Its a very small depreciation figure compared to a new Camaro that will eventually drop in price and have supplier discounts. I do need to get groceries, but don't need to go to work everyday, and do have a loaded GMC pickup to drive.

Crap...more decisions....
