Has anyone heard a tapping noise?

When starting my car fresh for a day, and letting it idle for a little I hear 4 taps in the right rear quarter. It sounds as if someone is tapping in the car with a key or something.

The taps are quick taps. It only does it once.

Thanks Sterlingnotes!

Shunt in the trunk. Or perhaps yours came equipped with a trunk monkey.

My husband and I also have heard a tapping noise in the back of the car shortly after we start it up after sitting for awhile. The first time this happened, we thought someone was tapping on the back window or something. Very distinct quick taps. This is the first post I have seen about this tapping noise. It only does it one time (about 4 taps) and it is not heard again. It doesn't happen all the time. I have heard it three times.

I remember hearing about this in another thread... here is FbodFather's response:

The following PIs and bulletins describe this noise on some of our other vehicles - your dealer has this info:

PIC4317D
04-06-05-009C
08-06-04-008
06-06-04-062A
AIP3301

If you are concerned that the noise is excessive, it would probably be best to have your dealer evaluate it and determine that it is a result of the EVAP test.

We are able to achieve great fuel economy numbers and low emissions due, in part to electronics such as this.

I have this same issue, does it when the car is cold, just started after I drive about a mile from my home does it at the same intersection (cold start time coincidence?) Happens only once each day I drove it but haven’t noticed it lately. The first couple times we hear it my wife and I look at each other with that WTF was that look. Sounds like somebody tapping on the rear passenger side quarter panel.

I never posted this issue before because nobody else mentioned it and didn’t want to sound like I was NUTS. It doesn’t seem to happen as often now that I have 3800 miles on the car but it was so weird I would love to hear an explanation of what the heck that sound is.

Wow that’s the 1st time I got an answer as I was typing my reply. That makes sense and it is a relief to finally know what that sound was.

They should find a way to insulate that little booger so people don't say WTF was that and take the car in for unnecessary service.

Great, not the noise but...I thought I was going nuts. It is identical for me. I have been meaning to post, but never did.

Thank you so very much! I have heard it a couple of times in that same area. Sounded to me like little pings of gravel, but sometimes I was sitting still. Makes sense!

Gosh folks, with all the emissions and safety stuff these cars have nowadays, I would be more concerned if I didn'there any of these types of noises.

Nothing to be worried about. FBodFather posted the information as noted earlier.

I could always comment about the noise being "woodpeckers", but then, that could lead to a fatal comedic spiral.!

I'm no longer worried now that it was explained, it was just weird when I didn't know what it was.

I had an Acura, Impala, Grand Prix, Two Camaros and they all made that noise. So your fears should hoepfully be quelled.

Enjoy the Car. I love mine!
