Installed Elite Engineering Catch Can....and...

Install went easy & looks good. I've only had it on for 1 day (maybe 40 miles)....and it already has about a tablespoon of oil in it. Should I be worried or is that pretty normal???

Sounds like too much, but check in 1000 miles. See my thread.

hmmmm...

Some good info there. So...the only way to tell if I my valley cover was leaking was to install a catch can? I've only had the car for a month....but the oil level hasn't dropped at all in a month....hmmm....

I didn't notice the amount of oil in the can missing on the dipstick. Out of 8 qts it wasn't that much. My oil issue went down a lot after the valley cover was replaced. I was glad I had the catch can. Now that I have over 40K miles on the car, there isn't but an ounce, maybe two after 7000 miles. I guess it took a long time for everything to seat well and now I'm not running a can. One day I'm sure it will start increasing again and the can will go back on.

Yours may not be the valley cover, but apparently it's not uncommon according to my mechanic.

I went ahead and blew through the fresh air line....and there is no resistance at all....like blowing through a straw.

Should I ask my dealer about it? Seems like an awful lot of oil in the catch can after only 40 miles. It would probably overflow at 3,000 miles!

It wouldn't hurt to ask. If they have a good Vette mechanic there then he'll understand your concern. But now that you do have a catch can you could catch more and carry it in in a clear bottle for more effect. It won't hurt anything.

What kind of driving did you do in those 40 miles. Any WOT/heavy acceleration runs? LS engines are known for their blow-by tendencies at high rpms. For what it is worth I catch oil at the rate of about 1 oz per 300 miles. Now right away there will be people who will post "OMG - there is something wrong with your car at that amount." But if you do the math I don't go down a quart until after 9000 miles. Even if I was still stock and had a drivetrain warranty (which with my mods of course I do not) I wouldn't get anywhere with a dealership over oil comsumption at that rate. Dealerships and car companies alike will routinely say that oil consumption as high as a quart every 2000 miles is normal.

So, I'm living with it and draining my can every 1000 miles (3.5 oz). I may have the valley gasket leak that "Indeed" posted about but for now I am on a wait and watch course of action. The oil loss is not costing me anything as I change the oil at about 6000 miles so I don't even have to add any. Besides, other than this my car runs great and I'm keeping all that oil out of the intake manifold!

OP shouldn't approach it as oil comsumption but that the cumbustion chamber is injesting, or would be injesting, an excess amount of oil. The Elite can does suffer from pull through, so what is in the can isn't all that is cycling through the system.

I know others have been denied, guess I'm lucky to have a good service department with a mechanic that is experienced beyond the manual.

Not about which is better. I have the RX too but don't like the check valve and ran without it.

the reason I went with the Elite is because I just wanted to be able to unscrew it....and dump it. Can't really go wrong with either can though

I talked to a mechanic today about the oil in the catch can after 40 miles...and he said that it was "normal" for city driving...

If it's normal...that's fine and dandy....I just don't want anything to be wrong with the car.

Although an ounce or two is a lot for only 40 miles I would give it some time. How many miles do you have on the car? I installed mine with about 1500 miles on it. After driving about 200 miles with it on, I collected about 2 or 3 ounces. Since then, I have about 2350 miles and I haven't collected anything yet. I am thinking that with the car being broken it that you are seeing a lot more in the can.

14,000 miles are on it. I'll give it sometime to see if the level goes up more or stays close to where it's at
