UPDATE.....Urgent: Should I add oil?

I think there is a thread out there talking about this so apologize to creating another one but I have to get ready to drive 550 miles.

Simple question, I have 720 miles on the car and about to total up another 1100 miles in the next 10 days. I checked my oil after the car sat there for a day and this is the status, should I add a quart?

There is oil right at the tip of the crosshatch.

Please reply and thank you!!!

I would add oil a half quart at a time and then give it plenty of time to drain down. I usually wait at least an hour, recheck and add more if needed. The slow draining back is a pain when trying to check your oil but a big positive in that it keeps the oil up top for lubrication when you shut-down and re-start a lot.

Without wanting to sound stupid, had a question: Doesn't the engine sensors alert you via the dash when you need an oil change(scheduled maintenance)? Also, the oil life percentage that comes up on the dash?

probably not sensors, more of a calculation based on time and driving habits, i.e. stomping the gas all the time vs. driving Ms. Daisy, the car knows how your driving affects the life of the oil.

Thank you! I know I can check the OLM but 500 miles ago, when I checked oil under similar conditions, the whole hash was filled with oil so I felt alarmed last night. I know the first 1500 oil can be consumed at a higher rate. But this was weird.

The concern with OLM within the first 1500 miles is that GM isn't clear on if they are actually actively monitoring the oil consumption or is it based on a canned formula based on miles driven.

I will pick up a quart of Mobil-1 and monitor carefully.

As others have said, the old drains very slowly from the top of this engine. So make sure there is a decent amount of time between shutting off the engine & checking the oil level. You may be surprised & accidentally overfill it.

But if indeed you are low, dropping that amount of oil with such few miles would have me monitoring it very frequently. My car burned off a quart during initial 1K miles, then seems to have settled in & the oil level has held steady since. I'm at 3K now.

The OLM is about how long the oil is still good for before you need to change it based on fancy math. Oil level is not a part of it. The OLM may say 90% but be 2 quarts low on oil. I believe there is a separate sensor that will set off a low oil level alert, but not sure at how low it will go off.

Ultimately it is still your responsibility to check the oil level yourself. The Oil life monitor is not an oil level monitor.
