Put your hand around chrome ring turn counter clock wise and it will then drop. There is an Allen screw holding it on. There also YouTube videos replacing shift knob.

A little more complicated operation, but in the end very pleasant and for me more accurate than a ball.

I replaced my entire assembly with an MGW.

https://www.gen5diy.com/collections/...hift-knob-boot or go through your GM parts dept.

MGW install instructions but shows how to remove the knob

Not sure if you found a shift knob yet, but my factory one was in the same boat as yours, so I found this classic one from Speed Dawg.
It was easy to install and I think it looks great for the price. One 'hiccup' was that initially it started rattling about a month after install. Turns out, the inner bore of the knob's mounting sleeve is slightly too large a tolerance to really snugly fit the shifter shaft (at least mine was-- maybe mine was an anomaly). Anyway, I pulled it off and put a thin layer of RTV black on the shifter shaft (up in the part this is not visible from the outside). Problem solved. Feels and looks great!

EPCO makes custom ones with endless options.. dream it and they probably will make it for you. Very reasonable price to. I know a bunch of people who have EPCO shifters and all very happy. I’ve seen some pretty awesome ones out there on people’s rides.

I wanted something with a new school and old school combo... I had them do a custom Hurst ball shift knob for me. Feels better to than the stock 1LE one did.

That looks really nice! Did you need an adapter? The knob doesn't really screw on our shifters, did you get non threaded?

Non threaded i believe on the gen5's. Its been awhile since messing around with the shifter's, so i cant fully remember. EPCO has made thousands for all makes and models though. They would know if you spoke to them. I do know i ordered the black extension adapter thing so the fabric was a little lower and not right at the base of the ball and that has 1 or 2 set screws. The ball part of the shiftier at the base has 3 set screws on mine. Check out EPCO site and then call them. They really make some amazing custom stuff.
