Car is off, electric fan is still on!
The last two times I've turned off my 2008 HHR SS the electric fan is still going. I've waited about five mins to see if it would shut off. Nope. I had to get back in the car, turn the car back on, then off, then it would shut off.
Bad thermostat? Thanks Guys!

Some fans will run after the car is turned off if it is very hot. Have you ever seen labels under the hood that say "Caution, fan(s) may start at any time."

That label is because when you have the engine idling and you are under the hood working on something, you are aware of the fan that might not be running at the moment. Most fans are not supposed to run with the key off unless it has been modified to do so.

The fan in our '97 saturn kept running one day. I was slogging through traffic in the middle of summer, then made a stop just off the highway. It was a worst case scenario for engine heat.

Ok, this same situation happened to me today with my SS. Turned car off. After a minute the fans kicked on, but the car was not running, in fact the key was in my pocket. Waited a bit to see if it would turn off. Nope. So, I started the car up and then turned it off and the fans turned off. This is normal?

The fans are contolled by a temp switch and the on and off temp is controlled by the ECM. If the temp is above the programmed fan on temp then the fans can kick on even with the engine off...at least if the ECM allows. Many cars back in the 80's were set up like this. Read your owners manual, it should state if the HHR fans can run even with the engine off.

My G8 does that...my '96 Accord does that. Only when I was driving hard or its a really hot day. I just walk away. Car turns on fine later.

those things help extend a cars life, a fan that runs any time it over temp [key on or off], and even better a oil pump that keeps going after shut down for a bit and also one that primes the engine before it starts.
