I think I was thinking about the tune. Doesn't the L99 require a tune after a gear change whereas the M6 LS3 is not required.?

The L99 requires a tune for 2 reasons, to adjust the shift points and to fix the speedo.

The LS3 also requires a tune but it only requires it to fix the speedo.

GM gears and/or differential comes with a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty against defects regardless of who installs it. If you have someone else do it, make sure you keep up with the miles and the date it was purchased because if you ever have issues, GM WILL contest it and ask for this info. Be warned, this will override the warranty on the factory gears or differential whichever one you have installed and replace it with the 1 year/12,000 mile warranty.

If you have the gears installed by non-dealer, and you break the rear end, GM might not cover the repair.

Now if you have a non-dealer install the gears, and you have problems elsewhere with the car, GM should cover the problem.

I just had this mod done at the dealership. The word I got was:

As long as a dealer installs these you're covered because we can not/will not be able to cover damage that can be done by an improper install.

So basically if you or some other shop puts them in and something goes wrong,don't come crying to us,lol.

It makes sense,you can't expect them to warranty something they didn't install,regardless of who made the parts.

I do all the work IT work for my dealership. I have read the documents and it will not be covered if a GM dealer does not install them.

Not that this will be correct or work, but, one way is to document every detail/step taken -- video is better than photo. If you can categorically prove that all steps were taken within accordance with required procedures, then, MAYBE, you could prove the install did not cause the failure -- but I don't think it would be worth the effort. I had GPI (Gwantney Performance/Gwantney Chrevrolet) do the 3.91 install. Would be hard for GM to say it was done 'wrong' -- even if they said the 'performance' side did the install. Just because it may have been 'billed' to one side, the same folks/shop did the work.

I took my l99 to the dealership (where I bought the car) to have the 3.91 gears installed. NO way would they even touch it. Said it would void my warranty. I tried to explain it was GM gears and GM dealership but they wouldn't talk about it.

Pretty clear that they didn't want the work. Not sure what timeframe you asked them about it, but its clear GM does not void warranty...

Well I guess I'll be taking it to the dealer. My dealer said that I could just take the differential in to have to the gears swapped. I asked this because I knew labor would be a lot cheaper but they said they would still only warranty it if they did the entire install:(

Anyone have an average price the labor should cost?

Just read the gear install instructions on the website stated above, and it specifically states to lift the car, remove the differential, and bring it to the dealer and have a trained technician do the gear swap, then reinstall differential yourself. I'll show that to my dealer

There are a number of dealers that will install gears, cams, superchargers and everything else. Just have to research them.
