Oil Life System

For oil changes do you rely on the car's oil life system to tell you when to change oil or do you follow a standard 3,000/5,000 mile oil change interval? Thanks!

With an LLT, DO NOT follow the DIC!

Here is my statndard post to V6 (in particular LLT engines) oil posts when asked about the DIC or questions about oil changes:

Newer 2011 and those that had the ECM flashed the OLM is now pretty much mileage based and will zero out at right around 5K, regardless of the driving condition. My guess is they did this because of the LLT engine/timing chain issues and people letting the OLM zero out.

As with all V6's (especially the LLT), I suggest the following:
1- Check your oil frequently; I do mine at every fill up
2- IGNORE the OLM
3- Oil changes:
Conventional <= 3K
Synthetic (Preferred) <= 5K. I use Mobil 1 and change at 4K

These little steps can help save your V6 from the dreaded timing chain/oil loss issues

oil meter, but I check the levels regulary...the meter tells you the oil life, dosent tell you how much is in there, and theses cars DRINK oil

I'm on a 7,500 mile oil change schedule but I check my oil for level and color once a week (or so).

mine consumes very little, if any oil. and it gets changed at 3000 miles.

i dont trust the "oil life" meter at all.

I go by the oil meter, but I change the oild when the oil meter drops below %50 life left. Typically it results in changing the oil every 4,000 miles or so.

Did that on my 2011 2SS/RS and also on my current 2013 ZL1.

Does Cadillac still make the V8 "Northstar" engine, think it was 4.6L. Anyways GM stated that a quart per 1,000 miles was normal for that engine. Really upset a lot of people, almost doing a rolling oil change.

Someone on one of these forums with a V6 has been doing an extensive OLM test with Blackstone Labs. He has changed the oil at 9k and Blackstone told him to try for 10k next time as the oil life integrity was still good.

I use the meter...at 50% I change it...I built me a set of ramps from 2 ten foot 2x12's...I cut each one at 4' 3' 2' 1'....nailed them together...it rises 1.5" every foot for a total of 6"s...makes changing my own oil safe and simple

You better document every oil change and keep receipts for the oil and filter. If something g were to happen to your engine during warranty your claim could be denied for lack of proof of proper maintenance.

I change mine around 50% on the oil life monitor. Never had an issue with oil level on this car or my 2010 with the LLT.

Every time this comes up and people say their car uses excessive oil I ask what break in procedure was used, by the book or like engine builders say running it hard. So far I have not gotten anyone to answer.
