Z-28 intake...almost

Heading up to Michigan for the holidays, got my new Z-28 intake delivered and I couldn't resist installing it real quick before the trip and taking it for a spin and...turn the key and it cranks and will not start. I replaced the battery this year and the starter last month. Pretty sure my Christmas present was an alternator that finally decided to die. The reader did say it was bad. I just really wanted to take it for a spin before I left. Oh well. Anyway heres a pic!

I have the Janetty race scoop, Z-28 intake, and the LOD intake manifold, my NW 102mm throttle body is sitting on the bench just waiting for the trip to GPI for the tune!!!

Did you port the NW tb? I ported mine and the throttle response is smooth as hell going from a ported vmax

How much difference does the intake manifold make without going forced? I'm curious because they also look really good...

Still need to get myself a z28 intake too.

Nice looking engine bay, good luck with that alternator!

I am planning on having the tb and the intake snout port matched, then the intake will be complete and as efficient as can be. I could probably add the double mylar lining like I had done previously but I don't know. It could only improve things but I don't think it would look right and the engineers obviously knew what they were doing.

Any thought on going with a CAI intake and having your paint guy work his magic? One of my main beefs with my old K&N intake was how it wasn't sealed down at the bottom. There was that huge gap that was, worse still, right by the header, letting all that hot air in. Not to mention the insulation on the inside of the CAI. And as I said before, I would like to do custom mylar lining again with this one but egh, I dunno. And I could technically have the entire LOD ported...I may just hafta do that

Hey Chris, yeah I thought about the CAI intake before, and still am. But it was a lot of money, but now it seems like a good mod to change over to, and the money isn't an issue now, lol, and my paint guy could do it up for me. I never paid attention to the bottom of my K&N to see what you are talking about. Next time I uncover her for a ride, I'll have to look. Thanks sir.. And yea, one of the things Aaron said on that vid is how the LOD could have been better port matched where the runners contact the heads for a better and smoother flow. You might as well while you have it off!!

Yeah, ya know what, I oughta just quit messing around and get the heads ported too and swap to a lighter valve while the heads are off, and since the heads are off, try out the PRC 243/255 111 cam that Bo has, or have a custom cam ground. My setup wants more cam than the SS4, but then I am gonna need more converter. This is going to get expensive...

Looks like I missed this. So Wayne got huge gains and mine didn't get much for numbers. He apparently got 40rwhp which I can't figure out how, and I don't doubt it because he's a good dude and wouldn't make it up, and kept his torque. I gained 12 rwhp and lost like 18 ft/lbs. Both auto cars. 1/4 mile ETs:

Before 11.320 @ 120.34 mph

After 11.079 @ 123.99 mph

Thats .241 & 3.65 mph difference between the LOD and 2"inch TSP headers vs the stock manifold and 1 7/8 headers, and the track conditions were the same with respect to DA, and the back seats and passenger seat out. So it was basically good for about a .15 give or take and trapping at exactly 7000 RPM. Its main effect was that it pulled the powerband out to the right, with a peak HP at 7600 RPM. It carries well out to 7800 but with the Circle D 5C, its just not enough converter. Its not really the ideal manifold for a car like mine right now, but I did get faster, with the weight of the seats out, .15 from a manifold swap and slightly bigger headers? I'll take it, and its just waiting on the boost to go in.

Yes sir!! If you have the time and of course the money, now would be the time to getter done!! As Larry the cable guy would say. lol. Then that 10 sec time slip your looking for should be an easy one for sure!! I'm thinking about adding a centri to mine, but not to sure if I want to spend THAT much on the kit, plus not too sure which one I should be looking at. Trying to slow down a bit and save some money, just in case.. And be happy with the street beast I do have..

Yea Chris, I wouldn't fib about any of this stuff, not my style. All I know is before the LOD install I was at 434rwhp on the dyno, and after the install we were at 460rwhp at 6800 rpm. I wasn't happy with them only pulling it to 6800 with this intake, so I found a good performance shop locally, Hartline Performance and took it to him. He fixed some issues he found in their tune, cats were not set correctly and the evap system code where they forgot to turn it ALL off. Then he did his tune and ran 4 pulls and the final pull out to 7500 and called it a day and got 15 more rwhp from 460.. So that was the 475 we ended up with. The tq number was so high because I think he had set the converter to lock at 2500, right off the hit, I had him change that back because the trans was running weird and I didn't like it. When I put the 4200 in there, I went back down south to the shop that did the original trans tune and had them adjust it, and it is spot on for my liking's and drives really great.

Edit: fixed the start hp number, 434, found my original dyno sheet from the cam swap.

Ok so I got my new GM replacement alternator installed yesterday, it was not a fun job. The 2010s are their own mess. There is a tube that runs down right in front of where you would be able to best lift the alternator out. I ended up having to disconnect my power steering line and it was still a super tight fit. From what it looks like, the 2011 and newer didn't have that metal line. The one I got came with the plastic clip damaged so its not locked in, its just sitting in. Its snug, at least, but still. So when I tried to pull the old alternator out, the entire mounting bracket slid with it, resulting in me having to use the jack and 3 blocks of wood to push it back into place to re-align the holes! Thats how much force it took!

It fired right up and I took it for a drive. It was raining out so I couldn't get on it. It sounds and looks nice, and after the drive, I felt the filter, and it felt considerably cool, since the Z-28 intake seals the compartment so much better than the K&N box.

Unfortunately having a bad alternator for as long as I did apparently fried my battery. I might be in for a Braille. Weight is weight.
