Catch Can Really Necessary on 2015 Z28?

I have a question. This is for you hardcore motor heads. I know there’s couple of catch can thread for the Z, but it really didn’t answer my question. The question is, is it really necessary? The reason I ask is, one of my mechanics says if the Z LS7 has a fuel injector above the valve, then catch can is not required. If the fuel injector is below the valve, then catch can is necessary to catch all the unburned crud. I have no idea what he was talking about. Can someone explain. I have basic knowledge about cars, such as fix or replace batteries, starter, alternator, brake pads / brake rotors, radiator, water pump, and other small things, but inside engine, no clue, except I know how it works.
Thanks a bunch.

2015 Z28 LS7 is sequential fuel injection by the way.

Necessary, Im not sure. I do have one on my car on the dirty side only and it will fill completely in one track day. The most Ive ever seen with hard street usage is 1/4 full.

Do you know if the 2015 Z28 LS7 sequential fuel injection is on top of the valve or below the valve (like on the side of the cylinder)?

All LS series motor have the injector before the valve. The gas hitting the valve helps cool it and prevent oil from cooking onto the valve. Over time this results in a build up which interferes with the valve properly sealing.

The newer LT series motor are direct injection. The injector is after the valve. They will eventually get a build up of burnt oil on the valve that will require the removal of the head. This is actually in their service schedule.

Your 2015 LS7 only requires the catch can to prevent the oil from the PCV system from entering the intake manifold and eventually the cylinders. The oil can puddle in the intake and on a hard corner slosh into a cylinder. If enough oil doe this it can result in "hydraulicing" the motor. Fluids do not compress so something has to give with unpleasant results.

This recently happened to a friend of mine in his Z06.

So yes I would recommend running a catch can. I run one on my LS3. Supprising how much it catches.

Good luck
Craig

I would love to see evidence of a LS7 hydrolocking from pcv oil... cause that sounds like the most ludicrous shit I have read in a long time.

There are several out there. I use the Elite. It's well made.

Thank you for your information. I have a 2015 Z28 with 9000 miles on it. Runs like new and I plan to keep it that way. A lot of my friends with Ford has catch can so I was thinking about it as well. Do you have any recommendation what kind I should use on my Z.

Never mind, you beat me to the question. Thank you again. Elite cans been mentioned several time on other threads. One guy I've read is going through hell, because when he added the can to his new camaro, the GM wouldn't warranty his new motor when it hydro-locked. GM said it was caused because of the catch can. So I'm like 50/50 on the can. Going to read up and follow up as much as I can.

Does anyone know whether installation of a catch can will void the power-train warranty?

It doesn't effect the warranty. It doesn't remove or disable any of the factory systems, it only adds a catch can into the PCV line. PVC still works as designed.

Everything affects the warranty when they are looking to get out of paying.

If you are truly concerned I'd surely get an answer from a GM rep before installing. Personally, I'm gonna wait until my warranty is up. I've seen too many folks from all brands get turned down for warranty work for little things that supposedly don't matter.
Just my 2¢.
