Emissions options

Does anyone know if the emissions options actually adds or changes anything from a stock zl1? I see it showing as a separate line item on some option lists.

Thanks, Mike Jones

That's a good question. I wonder if there's a price difference.

I know here, you need to complete an exemption for buying a car out-of-state. If buying new, I think there are only like 13 other states that share the same emissions standards as CA. If you don't buy the new one from one of those states, it gets complicated from what reading I'd done a few years ago.

I say all that because I kinda' wonder if there is a difference in price. Does CA-compliant emissions cost more on the sticker? Hardware-wise - I've never read or seen any differences. That'd be interesting to learn though.

In this case the price is zero, but I wanted to know if that is just a certification or does it add some kind of physical parts to the engine or tune. I don’t want any additional smog crap. This one is like New England areas like Maryland, Vermont, Rhode Island, etc.

As mentioned above, there is no price difference for CA emissions option itself. Starting with 2022 however, in CA you need to also ensure the car is ordered with copper-free brake pads, which you can option on the Chevy site when building a Camaro. Option cost will vary based on trim.

I bought my '18 from Texas and I live in CA. What I found out while researching this was that some time ago, dont remember when exactly, all camaros sold in the US are 50 state cars. this could be the case for different manufacturers as well, not sure.

I had a 1999 miata a long time ago that was missing a secondary cat because it was from out of state. would always throw smog techs off.

The YF5 option adds California emissions certification, and you get a sticker on the door jamb which makes California inspectors happy. From what I read online, no extra parts. I checked the repair manual, and there is mention of the California YF5 option, but nothing about parts/procedures.
This from the corvette forum echoes the opinion that all you get is a sticker:
