Subscribing to this thread as I'm looking at short blocks for slightly less horsepower.

I can tell you Zach at Katech has been very helpful answering all of my questions.

As for the Dart blocks, have you looked at https://www.amsracing.net/

No, but that 427 LS Next shp is tempting. Although those internals are not on the same level as the block itself. i've never heard of AMS. I'm sure if I upgrade the crank and rods it will be just out of my price range...

What Zach said. I went with Katech for mine.

I dont see these options online. You have a stout 418 ls3 shortblock stuffed with very nice guts, but it way beyond my price range. It's LSX range...

I've kinda decided on Iron after seeing people crack the stock ls3 sleeves above 1100whp.

I'd like a motor built for 1300, but plan to keep it under 1100. (but we know how that goes)

So far other quotes come close to TSP, but then tax, shipping, commercial only freight delivery.... all those things cost extra and kill the deal.

I'll give you a call today for a brief quote.

I think I've decided on a Thompson Motorsports 408. LY6 block, K1 crank, Manley Heavy H, Diamond pistons, arp mains, oil pump and 1 year warranty. Shipped. It's just a couple hundred more due to the oil pump/warranty.

Its guaranteed up to 1100 for one year. TSP rated theirs to 1300, but no warranty.

I think either will do a good bit more than that.

For that money, I think you can't go wrong and TMS is well rated/reviewed....

I went with the Thompson Dart SHP 388 iron block, which is rated at 1500hp. Callies crank, etc.

Which Callies? Magnum? Dragonslayer? Arp studs?

I changed my mind again. I went with their Dart Ls Next 427. Its the 1300hp package. Should do for now.

Block weighs 226 if i remember correct. Beast.

May be a stupid question but does the SHP block accept the LS3 pulleys and brackets on the front of the motor, or does that have to be changed over? Thanks fellas.

Not stupid. I had to call dart for the same concerns. The SHP LS Next (play on LSX) is what Dart calls a Gen3 compatible block. Which concerned me, because we're gen4.

He explained that both the Ls3 front, rear and valley covers fit, and the camshaft position sensor is in the front of the block. So it stays in the front timing cover. The knock sensor are NOT in the top of the lifter valley like the GEN3, instead on the side like ours gen4. Crank position sensor is also in the stock location. And the starter mounts the same. The ls3 oil pan will fit, so the oil filter can remain the same.

It does require a special head stud kit made by ARP for Dart.

http://dartheads.com/dart-product/shp-ls-next/

Also, the naming confused me at first. Check here for their different block types. It's my understanding that the SHP LS Next is supposed to be the most "drop in friendly" of the iron blocks.

http://dartheads.com/product-categor...t/next-blocks/

Now I have to find the budget for some 6 bolt heads, or just port mine and use 4 bolt holes... ugh

Please correct me if I am wrong with anything here. Currently looking for their head stud kit.

Thanks eLe, was not sure if you'd have to start changing pulley set-ups along with other minor things. That starts to add up quick as well.Keep us updated with the build, sounds sweet!

You don't have to 6 bolts - drill for 1/2" head studs is an option too.
