A spare is only usable on the front axle. Any LSD (including our ELSD) will be damaged if the rear wheels aren’t the same overall diameter.

Hmmm. Do you happen to know how many miles it would take for this damage to occur?

Dumber question: Are SS front and rear tires the same diameter?

EDIT: I didn't see Zed Sled's post before.

Yeah good question, that’s a 2.6% difference in rear OD. I’m not sure what % is acceptable.

I would Ask Al, but I'm going on a road trip in June and need an answer before then, lol. I guess as long as you get the tire fixed before it gets to the dealer for the mysterious eLSD warranty repair.

I just sent the question to the Modern Spare people. Will post whatever they send me in response. Not that I take anything from a seller at face value...

Here is the response form Modern Spare:

Thanks for reaching out to us!

According to our data the rolling diameter difference is not significant enough to adversely effect the limited slip differential when used on a temporary basis. When we say extended use that is to mean more than the typical 50 mile range 50 mph speed rating of typical spare tires. Conventional spare tires mostly have a rolling diameter of 25" or less and a speed rating of 50 mph whereas our product has a significantly greater rolling diameter and an "M" speed rating of 81 mph. Thus, when compared to conventional spares ours is more equipped for extended use.

The dimensions of our spare tire combo is 6 inches wide with a diameter of 26.5". You mentioned that your OEM rear tire has an approx diameter of 27.2". As a rule of thumb, a spare tire needs to have a diameter that is at least 85% of the diameter of the OEM tires. That puts our spare with a diameter of approximately 97% of the OEM tire which is well inside the safe zone.

Also, it is worth noting that Chevrolet has included an OEM conventional space saver spare on certain 2010-2015 Camaro's equipped with limited slip differentials. The reason that they did not include them on some of the premium models is because of the large caliper clearance that is required that a conventional spare wheel cannot provide.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to reply directly to this email.

I'm actually impressed by their response.

A lot of companies either wouldnt have responded or you would have gotten some shit canned response that was a big nothing answer.

I was gonna say the same thing. That's an amazing response from a company in this day and age.

I have to say that I was impressed with the response as well. It included real information. It came slightly less than 24 hours after making my inquiry via web form on their "contact us" page.

I replied back and asked just to be clear, this spare will fit on both front and rear? I got an affirmative response in just a couple of minutes.
