I run 2 catch cans...
|
Free Tarball (or why you need a catch can)
This is a picture of the oil collection bottle that I drain my catch cans into. I have been using this same bottle for 3 years, just over 10,000 miles. There is a nasty glob of solid tar in it. This would be in my intake if I didn't have any catch cans.
Those of you without a catch can probably have something similar to this in your intake tract right now.

Yummy. Guess I'll get that catch can a little sooner than planned. Thanx for the heads up.

Just had my throttle body off last week, no tar ball. not even visible oil. Reached my hand in and it did not even feel that slick.

The V6's seem to need the can alot more than the V8's. But they are a good idea for any engine.

Nope, as I said in the other thread if I was spinning 7k or doing 1g turns, I would put one on because that changes things dramatically, but for my LS3 it's not a problem.
What made me skeptical is I have run the hell out of my Silverado for a long time and it has an LS motor that used to have an EGR. I assure you an EGR will put 10 times the crap in your intake than the pcv ever thought about (the oil from the pvc combined with exhaust gas is pretty nasty). That engine is a 155k and has no build up on the intake side of the valves. I know because I just put a new intake on it. I have used Seafoam occasionally over the years. Yes, if I had a V6 I would probably have one, but not before I looked for myself. Think about it, installing the catch can is probably just as much work as removing the TB for a look.

That is good to know. I was going to use Seafoam more frequently with the LS3 because this CC thing had be a bit paranoid. Now, I don't think I need to.
They should do an episode of Myth Busters on this.

lol yeah this would be a good myth buster idea. I think the cc thing is just a big cash grab imo. That's just me.

I agree with what others have said. In a car continually spinning big RPM and ripping through corners at high G forces, it is probably a good idea. But if your doing that with your car, a roll cage, helmet and fire suit is probably advised as well, and I do not intend on those options either for now.

Each to his own what he installs. My 2010 with a total of 6400 miles has had the catch can for the last 4000 miles. I checked it over the weekend and pored out about an 1" of oil in my RX can. Real glad it was in the can and not in the intake. Planning on keeping the girl till they take my drivers license away and I do not want to lose any power due to oil burned into intake.

I am a staunch advocate of catch cans but... are you sure you didn't drop a crumpled paper towel in you collection bottle sometime over those 3 years? Sure looks like it.
