GM Supplier

A German company that supplies most of the auto industry with PA-12 exploded. Destroying half of their plant. They will be down for at least 6 months for repairs.

So what does this means to us? PA-12 is a resin used in gas tanks, moldings and interior seats. Ford has a 2 week supply but GM is currently out. So unless they find another source, production for most of the industry will be grinding to a stop soon. So those waiting for orders, you will most likely be waiting a bit longer.

That's terrible to hear. I hope the people involved in the explosion are getting good treatment.

However, are you sure that there is only 1 supplier?

Yes, the only plant. I work in manufacturing and it was just announced to us to expect some downtime.

That's crazy. Hopefully the explosion was on off hours. I am sure there are other companies that manufacture the same product.

I highly doubt that's the ONLY plant that manufactures that resin. There's just no way. Either way-- interesting.

This is sort of similar to the Japan tsunami incident. Where most companies got their metallic from that company and even though others make metallic for paints, it's not the same.

This is a little different because they can't just offer different seat cushions like they did with paint. Molds will need to be made. Standards will need to be on par and all these things take to time. Of course companies are all scrambling right now to find someone else.

I hope no one was injured, but that's not good for us at the Goodyear Plant. We are already in a "sort of" slow down mode :( and there's only so many orders for replacement tires for us to manufacture.
