going to look at several E46 BMW's this weekend. Lots of used cars in the market. I've always wanted a BMW but am not keen on the maintenance required. Any other cars I should be looking at?

For 6k 1994-2001 Acura Integra. 35+mpg, dead realiable for zillions of miles, relatively sporty, and they age well. I don't have one, but they are well known as supremely good used cars.

those Integras are great cars and the motors are top notch. It's hard to find an unmolested one. I am looking for something bigger for hauling the dog and wife and kids around in... I love the 325 sport wagon bmw's. They are practical and sporty. We've already got a little nissan Rogue SUV and I'd rather get something sporty and fun for a daily driver. That's why i'm considering a sportwagon.

I see I see. Well my 02 WRX wagon has been dead reliable, and it will go 200k miles without worry. I can consistently get 24mpg out of it. It may be a little on the smaller side, but certainly the same size as a 3 series wagon...and you can find them for $7k easily, in CA at least. You can get the regular Impreza wagon for even less.
The Mid 2000 subaru legacy wagons are roomier and are really good cars too, with a more "adult" refined interior. The engine and drivetrain on these cars is infallible too...but they may break your budget.

Cobalt is a good choice, they're solid cars for the most part
