There is absolutely no reason to pay over "invoice" on an custom ordered vechicle. Actually you should pay a little under because that "invoice" price typically includes some profit to the dealer for advertsing, financing, etc. Additionally dealers get a guaranteed "holdback" which for GM has typically been 3% of "invoice". This holdback is typically not on the table for negotiations because this is their guaranteed profit. Back out shipping costs, multiply net by 3% and that is the holdback guaranteed profit of the dealer. You should be able to get a little lower than invoice, maybe $300 to $500 since they are not financing, advertising, etc. At most, agree to actual "invoice" price and let them have their dealer holdback. But make sure you see the REAL invoice from the manufacturer, not something they typed up

the way i understand things, invoice does not include the advertising fee of approximately $500, depending on the dealer. every dealer incurs that fee and is supposed to charge that fee if they give you invoice pricing. it does not matter that they did not advertise "your" car because you custom ordered it, that fee is just an arbitrary number assigned to every car purchase just like the 900 or whatever is charged for every car for shipment regardless of where they ship it. from carsdirect.com:

  • Advertising. For example, Verizon spends 70% of its revenue, which comes out to seven billion dollars, on advertising. Car companies are no different, and it's not cheap. They pass this national advertising cost into the invoice price of their cars.

preferred pricing includes that advertising fee on the other hand, so a lot of times preferred pricing can actually be cheaper than invoice + advertising, which is what most of you are probably paying when you actually say you are only "paying invoice." in fact i wouldn't be surprised if some of you paying under invoice are getting charged a very high "advertising fee" to make up for the difference in invoice rebating the dealer is giving you. we'd have to of course compare prices, but it would not surprise me.

then again, this is just what i have come to understand in my research. i could be wrong.

I ordered my 2012 2SS 45th AE and am paying $350 below invoice plus will get $750 off because I am a USAA member. It hits the production line on October 3rd and should have it in my possession at the end of October/beginning of November.

The dealers in rural areas may not be part of the advertising compacts, which could allow you to avoid a few hundred dollars. But they also don't handle many custom orders, so you can be limited by allocation constraints. And you could miss out on some of the usual freebie oil changes and detailing that local dealers tend to give with a purchase. You just have a lot more to weigh out than price alone.

is there somewhere i can see the dealer/invoice prices for the 2011 and/or 2012 models?

i'm wanting to order a 2SS (maybe RS?), but not sure if i want to find a dealer who can still get me a 2011 (if that's possible), or go ahead with the 2012

Yes. The destination is fixed pricing. Think of it this way. When figuring out the dealer, invoice, or MSRP, calculate those up, and add on the $900 destination.

I just ordered my 2ss RS on Friday and got it for 500 below invoice. The dealer told me that it's much easier for him to give me the car at below invoice when I'm getting it ordered from the factory. If I were to go for something he had to buy from another dealer he would charge me above invoice. Hopefully I'll be driving my new 12 by the end of November.

That's one aspect of this which seems very unpredictable ... some dealers dislike ordering extra cars, and some dislike making swaps with other dealers.
