Its a plug-in hybrid. It can go ~40 miles without fuel on a full charge. After those 40 miles, it becomes a conventional hybrid. Range is 300-400 miles (different sources tell me different ranges)

It's not even a hybrid. It's a E-REV (Extended-range electric vehicle). Calling it a hybrid implies that the gas engine AND the electric motor work in conjunction to power the car. That's not the case in the Volt, as the gas engine never directly powers the car. For the first 40 miles, the car runs solely on electricity for 40 miles. Afterwards, the gas engine kicks on to recharge the battery and keep the electric motor running. The gas engine never powers the car itself.

actually its a little ironic GM doesnt want to call it a hybrid because by definition its the only true hybrid in existence. A hybrid vehicle by definition has 2 or more energy sources that it uses to go. The volt uses both electricity and gas to get some where. The pruis only uses one fuel source (gas) to get from point A to point B

Depends how far you drive. Less than 40 miles? Totally electric. More than that? Its a hybrid. The Volt has a series hybrid system, compared to a parallel system used by most other hybrids.

Actually, GM's most recent estimates suggest that it can go closer to 50 miles on electric power. It's really a remarkable machine.

Don't forget the $7,500 Tax Credit

I've read that the tax should come down in the years after the original as they cost-optimize the production...

The concept was about as aerodynamic as a brick. Lutz said that it worked better when they stuck it in the wind tunnel backwards.

The concept was the drivetrain, not the form. They never said the production version would look like that. Form follows function. Besides, look closely at the concept and you'll see that its a sedan.
