Duration is what changes your PTV clearance. Also how aggressive the cam is, as far as ramps rates. Milling the heads, different cam, different valves, different head gasket thicknesses all change PTV clearance. You will have the tightest clearance somewhere between 15deg BTDC and 15deg ATDC. I always measure. Not everyone does. I'd rather not test my luck, so I measured everything. Some people are good with slapping it all together because they were told it fits. Doesnt matter to me, I'd still check.

But most people....too many people....still think it's all about valve lift and milled heads. KW

You can squeek out a bit more power just by taking measurements, knowing how much room you have to mill heads to get the compression where you want it. I'm an odd ball though. I don't screw around doin all this in the car. I pull the engine, put it on a stand. No one else seems to be rambunctious enough to do it that way though. They'd rather cut corners and do what they think it the easier way.

I did it carefully, measuring everything. PTV at every degree on every valve on every cylinder, pushrod length on every cylinder, degreed the cam, etc., all with the engine in the car. My back felt it! |

Makes me want to just run stock heads even more.

Stock heads flow unbelievable well. Porting is not necessary unless your increasing bore size, or going forced induction. Back cutting the intake valve increases low lift flow quite a bit. Most I would do to the heads would be smooth out the bowl area, and milling to bump compression.

You may be right, though. Depending on the intake, this set-up may ride-out another 500 RPMs....but may have sacrificed mid-range power to get there. BTW, the TSP heads gave me a significant bump in the midrange.....up to 30hp/20tq under the curve. Makes the car a much better performer. KW

I gained 15rwhp putting ported heads on my LS3 with a 218/229-.563" cam.
The build I have now is still my daily. 6000 stall th400 |

Looks like it pulled well to 6500 rpm, they terminated the run at 6500?

Every time I go to the strip and every single pass I am trying to set a new personal best. Its not about a dyno number and its not even about bragging rights, its about going faster and pushing this car to new limits! To each their own though, sir
