Drag Radials: run to the bone or use fresh ones?
The LSX event in Commerce is two weeks away!
I'm hitting the track this weekend to prep and I've got a fresh set of Mickey Thompson 305/45-18 ET Street Radials. My old MT DR's have no tread left: The last four trips to the track, they've been hooking astoundingly! 1.5's and 1.6's all day long, even with a loaded launch (1500-2000 rpm). So basically, it seems I've got slicks. But I like to do nice healthy burnouts and I don't know how much longer they'll last and don't want to discover that at the LSX event. So, should I put on the fresh set today and break them in this weekend? Use the worn set one more time? What do you DR racers like to do? Padre |

to be "safe"... you should swap them out and wear in the new ones.
how many passes do you have on those?

EDIT: I say about 70 passes. Seven times and I do 10+ passes on track days and I've had these since last October.

We run ours that low all the time but I don't want to tell you to go for it. The only problem with using the new set is that you need to break them in properly before the event and that's coming up fast. I would probably use them one more weekend since they are working good, just make sure to check the inner edges for excessive wear. IRS cars tend to wear out the inner edge of the tire first...

That's a lot of runs. Like Brett is saying (Brett R btw???), I would not run a fresh set for the event.
On our ODR LSX car the 315's had about 30 runs and I think we will run them one more time, best of 1.23 on them.

If I get the new ones on today, I'll get 10 passes this Sunday afternoon and 10 more the following weekend. I think I can smoke 'em well enough to prep them. Padre |

Wow, and I was worried about my NT05R's getting too worn. They at least have some tread left on them. They might just be getting broken in!!

It has lots and lots of BMR parts sir.
I think my buddy has the best 60 foot of all the ODR cars actually.

I can't tell from the pics but as soon as you see cord they are done. If they are really close to this I would swap them out otherwise if they go away on you during eliminations, you are done.
Drag racer for 25 years. Showing off by doing a healthy burnout is a waste of money, especially with MT's. I ran Goodyear Eagle for the first 15 years and you had to really get them hot to hook. Tried a set of MT's, they did incredible burnouts (that's me) 6 races later, they were done. I phoned MT to complain and he asked about my burnout and laughed when I told him that I sat in first for a few seconds, hit second and tacked it up for another few. The MT rep said that with their tires you only need to burp them for a second, clean the rocks off. they are a way softer compound then the Goodyear slicks. Tried another pair and did this and they hooked just as well and we can get a season out of them now. |
