Smile Storm Damage... close call!

If you live on the east coast, I know you got a taste of the freak January storm we got yesterday. Well, I got home from work today and seen some damage that made me thank the Camaro Gods. Now I need to start building my good karma points back up.

What you see in the pictures is the aluminum siding decor on the front side of the carport. Luckily the wind lifted it up and on top of the carport and not on top of our cars!

I already got tomorrow off work, so it looks like tomorrow I'll be on a ladder with a rivet gun.

That thing acts like a wind tunnel, and a thousand rivets probably will not hold that piece of metal down especially if it hangs lower than the fascia. I was thinking of adding something like this to my house, and thankfully I didnt! Lost 12 trees in Sandy and now this freak storm. I have been roofing for a while now, and I have never seen weather this bad, and it is only getting worse.

Count your blessings!

My wife asks me the same thing. I tell her you either back in or back out. I guess I just like fast escapes.

Man you lucked out for sure!

I hate to say but that Carport looks sketchy. We know how those winds can get sometimes here in the south...crazy.

My Engineering back round is coming into play.......It is lacking substantial bracing in my opinion both laterally and vertically.

Throw some 45* bracing on that thing and ensure the posts, which there are only 2,have adequate enbedment or attachment into the ground to prevent uplift.

If you really want to put the Facia back on use 3 washer screws vertically about every 12" or so it will stay put.Skip the rivets.

You have two very nice cars under there that the structure is supposed to protect and not have it collapse on top of.
