makes me want the ducts even more! hehe
Heritage! The gen 5 has round driving lights (and the gills in the rear 1/4s) for that reason.

Racepak is definitely top shelf!

Spend a good portion of the day gutting the hood and modifying the hood vent insert more (sorry no pics)

This was a little nerve racking as this is a $3200
one off dry carbon hood. Which we had been waiting for a long time. We had the hood latch omitted along with some unnecessary holes for our project.

We are also going to make the hole on the top side larger and remove the mounting points for the vent. You'll need to stay tune for the rest of the story.....

Katech made us a set of one off covers. here is our original covers.

We had them
  • Omit the nut certs for the coil brackets.
  • Omit the filler cap a we are dry sump
  • Relocate the vacuum line fittings to the rear of the covers.
  • They sent us the billet caps and we gave them the same treatment as the rest of our engine parts.
Looks much cleaner. They still need to be sanded, clear coated to build us a base and finally one last coat of satin clear to give them a matted look.

One off cooling plate. Since we aren't using the hood latch, need to have the hole.

NATHAN!! You aren't done yet? Have you started polishing the polish? Smoothing the smooth lol? If you don't hurry up, the 6th gen will be here and you'll have to start all over again! Although... I HIGHLY recommend you start with a body-in-white this time; it will be much cheaper and less traumatic!

I would rather see this car at Camarofest than the 6Gen. There is "new", and then there is "art and perfection".... and the G5.R is all that.

Curious on your reasoning for removing all the hood bracing. Seems like you're saving a lb but risking cracking earlier in the part life whether its dry carbon or not.

LOL, hey Doc!!!Great to hear from you and glad things are going well! Body in white would have definitely been the way to go. The way we are going the 7th Gen might be here before we are done.

Most of these hood are sold to racers and they guts them out. As far as cracking, I don’t think it will be a problem. It’s amazing how strong this stuff if. When cutting the carbon, if I don’t make a clean cut and just leave a one strand off fiber uncut, you can pull on it as hard as you want, that thing isn’t coming off! It’s just crazy strong.

BTW, we did lose a few lbs...lol

Here an idea we played with.... not sure

Name: 13.jpg
Views: 1924
Size: 186.2 KB

Working on the interior. We were going to go with a COPO radio delete pod but we figured we do something cooler.

The idea was to clean up the face plate and give it a floating effect. to give it that effect, we cut the lower portion of the plate off so no visible mount points will be view.

Name: 1.jpg
Views: 1948
Size: 108.6 KB

Next, we had to prep the plate in on both sides by cutting off and smooth out any extrusions

Made a template from cardboard.

Glass the backside and did some rough sanding.

Prep the dash for the floating effect by cutting off the mounting points

Name: 2 (2).jpg

And here you go.

Name: 7.jpg
Views: 1917
Size: 155.3 KB

Name: 8.jpg
Views: 1906
Size: 147.2 KB

Think we will do some switch... still deciding on which to use, but this will give you an idea.

Name: 008.jpg
Views: 1996
Size: 134.1 KB

To finish the floating effect, we cut off the side bars from the dash sub structure.

Name: 9.jpg
Views: 2007
Size: 146.2 KB

Also remove the pieces on the side of the trans tunnel. Now we will be able to finish off the flooring material all the way to the fire wall which I think will give it a much nicer look.

additional benefit.... lost another few more lbs.

This build is unreal... I've always been more of make it fast and not caring about pretty but this actually makes me want to revisit things on my car and clean them up. The ONLY build thread i started reading and literally went all the way thru looking at every page. Im from louisiana but working in nor cal this makes me wanna drive down and look at this thing. Not the fanboy type but this is genuinely inspiring.

This thread is amazing and very refreshing. We don't see enough weight reduction builds on this forum.

I plan to do something similar on a much smaller scale. I want to shed a couple hundred pounds from my 1le.

The 6 Gen is almost around the corner so with figured we scrap it as there's still too much work left and build G6.R instead. G5.R is old news already.....
