91 Camaro ZL1 Almost Finished. Watch out 5th Gens

I know this is 5 gen but I am in the process of having built a LSA and 6speed out of a 2012 ZL1 Camaro with only 1000 miles installed in my 91 Camaro convertible. Was going to attempt to do it myself but then realized it was way beyond what I could handle. Will be posting as the project moves along. Hawks 3rd Gen will be doing the work. Considering it's 1000 pounds lighter than todays ZL1 Camaro it should be pretty bad ass and will surprise a lot of the Gen 5s

Yeah. I'd say. Lightest I've seen a third Gen Camaro recorded at from the factory was a 4 cyl 3050lbs. That's not scientific, just a little internet research. But even with the LSA and appropriate drive train components the car ought to be quick.

I think its wikipedia, anyway someone showed that the Trans Ams used for jumps on Knight Rider were stripped down to 1700lbs. So if someone really wanted a lightweight Camaro, grab a third gen and start ripoing stuff out.

It's in early stages. Car is being shipped to Bruce at Hawks 3rd Gen. He already has the donor car with the LSA and 6 speed and he will be sending me photos etc as it progresses. I will post as I get stuff from him. It will be a 6 speed manual. Automatic might be faster but I am an old guy and I just wouldn't want it with a slushbox.

It was a hard decision. I backed out at first as I will have as much in it considering the value of the car,(only 11k miles on it and perfect) I will have as much in to it as a new ZL1 but then again a mint white 91 Camaro convertible with ZL1 pushing it. I decided for me that would be cooler than just buying a new one.

Ok guys it's close to being done. New super heavy duty rear end, big brakes, big tires, a little extra boost to the supercharger and a few other things. Here are a few photos or you can go to my website. Getting real excited. It will be done by June. It will be atleast 1000 pounds less than the new Zl1's so if I can hook it up the new ones won't have a chance.

That is gonna be very nice.

What are you going to reinforce the chassis????

As a previous owner of two 3rd gens I can tell you a stock 350 will twist a hard top with no T tops. You will have more than double the HP/torque in an vert so that chassis is gonna need some attention

Very true. Even at the stock LSA hp level; the frame on that 3rd gen vert will twist like a pretzel unless seriously reinforced.

OP - Nice project. It's rare to see clean 3rd gen these days and I love seeing LS swaps into them. I had a few back in the day and liked them a lot.

Bruce at Hawks has that covered with subframe connectors. If Hawks builds it then it will be solid and correct.
