How about a 1LE with Automatic?
I know, the 1LE is a track version and it really should only come with a manual transmission. However, is there anyone else like me out there that would desire a 2016 1LE with 450hp LT1, NPP Exhaust and 200ms or faster 8 speed auto transmission? Kinda like a c7 automatic vette with the z51 and exhaust package.

Idk, there's something I really like about it not being available in auto. It's like it's only availible for true track enthusiasts.

I guess if you want an auto, you should go for a straight SS instead of a 1le.
I wouldn't be caught dead on the track with an automatic. M2c Last edited by Mark T; 07-18-2014 at 10:21 PM. |

I personally would not see anything wrong with a 1LE type package with an automatic transmission. It would be a great option for someone who wants that type of car but can't use a manual trans due to bad knees or wanting to share with another driver that can't work a clutch.
As you said, sort of like a C7/Z51. Or, a ZL1 for that matter. Lots of those are autos.

I'm honestly not trying to be a jerk but this ain't no automatic car. Full stop. Not with the gears in it. You'd end up going to 3.42s or 3.45s or whatever is there and then you lose the track advantage. You'd need more HP. The car is designed for less HP and more pull through the gearing.

I don't disagree with the comments. I own a 1le, but I honestly don't track the car. I like the idea of a performance based auto version as well. IMO there is such a big difference in the driving experience between a standard ss auto vs. the 1le setup. So today here is what happens when you say you want an automatic transmission with in a V8 Camaro...
- You have to switch to the L99, which has AFM and is down 26hp over the LS3 - You can't use the NPP exhaust due to AFM. Unless you tune it out and go aftermarket exhaust. - Technology-wise you get a slow shifting 6 speed auto, which really needs a tune to firm up the shift points. - You are stuck with the standard suspension. I am sure some folks would love the 1le suspension regardless of transmission. I think if they offered a new 8 speed auto, 1le appearance and suspension, maybe a 3.55 rear and NPP exhaust there would be some takers. Probably guys like me that don't track the car but love the look and feel of the 1le as a daily driver. Basically, the same setup offered in the c7/z51 vettes. |

There are a lot of cars with performance programmed automatic transmissions. Many automatic equipped cars are faster than standard transmission cars of equal merit. I doubt that I can shift the 6 speed in my Camaro as fast as a computer could shift an automatic. Since I have owned cars that I was able to shift much more quickly than my new Camaro, I do not think that an automatic would be all that bad. All of that being said; I would still choose a 6 speed. It all boils down to personal preference.

I get exactly where you're coming from, raptor. I was talking just last nite that I haven't had an automatic car since '93. Main reason started out was better gas mileage. Now I just prefer them. I've had auto pick ups, too. Oh so boring to drive.
But, I do work for Chrysler and I'm seriously considering a '15 SRT8, 485 HP version, with the 8 speed auto trans. I'm going to be living 4 miles from work. I won't have time to get bored driving it. And, the claim is better mileage than the manual - 25 mpg on the freeway - so long trips wouldn't sting much, if at all. There isn't even GG tax on the auto, there is $1000 GG on manual. Heck, my lil Jeep Compass that I drive to work now only gets about 30 mpg on the freeway, with 168 hp. In the club, many have 1LEs and they are sweet! Few (I'm not sure if any) see track time. If I wanted to get back into autocrossing and HPDEs, I'd already have one parked next to the ultimate Grand Touring car, my ZL1 convertible. But, on a fun Sunday autocrossing, an auto 1LE would be a great all around car for many. These big cars are a blast to toss around. I ain't getting paid to drive, so it's gotta be fun!
