Cylinder Deactivation Concerns

As he order for my 2022 gets (hopefully) closer I’m starting to be slightly concerned about the cylinder deactivation in the car. I came from a 2017 charger scatpack where the MDS is notorious for doing damage to lifters and camshafts. By the time I got rid of it at 29,000 miles it had a pretty good tick and the signature stumble at idle. Always kept up with everything on the car religiously. I know older GM vehicles had issues with their version called “AFM”.. when I ordered the Camaro I saw the range device that some use. After looking further into it, it looks like this won’t be compatible with my 2022 or even anything after 20. Tuning is definitely out of the question as I’d like to keep the warranty intact for as long as possible. Are these concerns I should have or does gm have it polished pretty well? Hope it’s less jerky than my charger as well.. that car felt downright awful coming in and out of 4 cylinder mode not to mention how bad it sounded! Any information is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have a 2017 2SS with 52000 miles on it and I can't tell when it shuts down the 4 cylinders or turns them on. The economy is great for a V8 and the power is there when you want it. I get better mpg then I did in my 2012 V6 Camaro or my V6 Cadillac SRX. That being said I must of been lucky and got a good one because others on the forum seem to have a bad experience with AFM.

Transition from 8 to 4 cylinders is seemless and imperceptible.

As far as concerns with reliability of the system, the LT1 engines rarely have any issues.

The cylinder deactivation problems on the Gen 4 engines were massively blown out of proportion in my opinion. Most people did not have problems with failures of the lifters. More often the system would cause excess oil consumption.

I suspect where the majority of lifter failures happened on Gen 4's was when people started putting bigger cams in their engines and not changing the lifters.

I don't consider the system to be of any concern on the LT1 V8 in the Camaro.

The cylinder deactivation sucks and so do the lifters they use for it. Where I work we've got three guys with new vehicles down all with lifter issues. It is absolutely a concern for the V8 camaro and any other vehicle that uses those lifters.

I agree, this is what I have heard as well. Granted, I haven't heard much with the Camaro per se - it usually involved the half ton Silverado.

The fuel mileage for the 6.2 is crazy, given the size of the motor and the power that is produced.

I've gotten over 24 mpg on mine...average speed on my commute is only 60 mph so that's probably helping alot.

I have the 2020, and like the others have said the switch from 4 to 8 is just slightly noticeable. I tried the range device and personally I thought the car felt slower. But it didnt switch 4 cylinder mode.

Yes, I had gotten high 20's IIRC. I was honestly shocked at the efficiency. I've had smaller motors in the past that have struggled to achieve those kinds of numbers.

Hats off to GM with the LT1.. it really is an exceptional motor.

Interesting, as I don't believe I had ever noticed the switch of cylinders. I DID notice when the NPP exhaust would close/open, which was quite annoying. That was remedying after getting the car home from the dealer though... fuse pull.

2 chevy's here.
2016 5.3l z71 4x4. bought in '17 with 10k on the clock and now has just over 40k. most of it's life was towing a 7klb wakeboat. I have had ZERO issues with the motor and can't really tell when it's going from v8 to v4. it has, so far, been a great truck as far as running gear goes(don't get me going on the inside tho). average 18mpg's when not towing and 12mpg's towing which I find outstanding for a gasser..... sure most of that is due to the cylinder shutdown.

2020 camaro have only had for a couple months-bought used with 9k on the clock. it's about as noticable as the truck going from v8 to v4. pretty seamless. took it from vegas to laughlin a month ago and averaged almost 25mpg's there and back which is almost as good as our sonata with the 2.0t motor. hats off to GM for offering up a ton more power than the 1500 but some crazy gas mileage IF you keep your foot out of it...

Even if you deactivate the DFM, the DFM lifters are still in the car and doing work. Getting the Range disabler, you could still have lifter failure.
