The new Chevy Camaro outside the Times Building

Three Chevrolet designers brought four new Camaros to Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday, parking the sporty cars — in silver, black and red — outside the Times Building.

General Motors said that it already had 14,000 orders for the Camaro, which has just begun to roll off assembly lines and provides a rare bright spot for G.M.

Sangyup Lee, exterior design manager for the car, pointed out features of the Camaro as passers-by stopped to study the car, take pictures with cellphones and ask questions.

Camaro detail.Mr. Lee, who was raised in Seoul, South Korea, studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., and worked at Pininfarina and at Porsche before joining G.M.

“Look at the headlight and the eyebrow,” he said. The ringlike lamp and metal overhang suggest an air of intense concentration. “There is lot of detail and jewelry to the car.”

He ran his hands over the wide rear fender, or shoulder, of the black car. “This is the deepest stamping General Motors has ever done,” he said. “It is deeper than anything Porsche ever did.” Mr. Lee pointed out a set of creases in the metal just behind the door. “We call them gills. They are a reference to the 1969,” referring to the model year that inspired the Camaro revival. “We wanted to make them functional, to cool the brakes, but they are just symbolic.”

None of the designers had been born when the 1969 Camaro was introduced. “There was no tradition of muscle cars in Korea,” said Mr. Lee, who is 39. Micah Jones, 32, who graduated from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit in 1999, worked on the interior. He said he had looked at pictures and at the 1969 model belonging to Ed Welburn, G.M.’s head of design.

Rebecca Waldmeir, from G.M.’s color and trim studio, is 26. She showed off the palette of available colors. Some are termed heritage colors because they were used on earlier Camaros. There is also “inferno orange,” which includes a bit of metal fleck to it — and closely matched the color of her slacks.

The concept version of the car was shown at the Detroit auto show in January 2006 and generated tremendous enthusiasm. “People came up to me with tears in their eyes,” Mr. Lee said. The appearance of the Camaro in the blockbuster movie “Transformers” has also inspired enthusiasm around the world for the car, he added. His parents in Korea saw his car in the film, and it has become popular in China.

New Yorkers take a closer look

Electrical workers in overalls — the names “Sebastien” and “Jim” were stitched on them — stopped by the Camaros. They stared through the windows and bent down and looked around and under the car. “Jim, you’re staring awfully hard,” Sebastien said.

A man rapidly pushing a baby stroller with a sleeping toddler stopped suddenly when he saw the Camaros.

“What is the horsepower?” he asked Mr. Lee.

“For the V-8, 426” Mr. Lee replied, “And the V-6 gets 29 miles per gallon on the highway.” The G.M. designers constantly emphasized the Camaro’s fuel economy.

“Wow, I’ve got to take a picture of this,” said the man with the stroller. “My brother is a huge Chevy guy.” He juggled his phone, his gloves and the stroller handle as tried to frame the picture.

But hey it takes a lot for the Manhattan crowd to notice anything, especially a car.
