Really it all depends on what you are looking to do... If you aren't going to road race the car, or track it a few times a year there really is no reason to get the Z28..I think they are really badass looking cars, but for me the price tag of one doesn't justify having it just for looks as I don't road race. The ZL1 has tons of instant power in a car that handles just as good as a Z28 ( for street driving ) has all the cool comforts and features and is cheaper.... but in the end you have to be happy with what you buy...There really is no wrong answer...

Ironically.. I am looking to get into a Challenger, as there is more room inside for the kids...as well as my headroom... at 6'-4" my helmet gets stuck on the roof of the ZL1, and makes it quite difficult to race...damn sunroof

Hagerty is $1,242 a year. Will save me about $290 a month!

Haha. I’ve been kicking around the idea of a Challenger Hellcat too. I’ve found that the legroom isn’t much better, it’s about the same. The difference seems to be in extra width, headroom and big trunk.

Which means I’d have to goto a Charger Hellcat to get significantly more interior space. But I strongly prefer the looks of Challenger > Charger

Whoa that is crazy - I pay $801 for 15 Z/28 for 6 months - not a DD, just a weekend car. Was $524 for 6 months before I added my 16 year old son to the policy - something about teenage boys and 505 hp and all that...

I got a quote from Hagerty, they were similar to Mercury where I have mine. They have good prices for a one off though.

On your original question of ZL1 vs Z/28.

ZL1 is better all around car, good for everyday and for fun as well. Minor mods (pully, tune and exhaust) can yield good power gains at reasonable cost. Better ride and more creature comforts. So all around an easier car to live with.

Z/28 is better track car with pupose built brakes, suspension etc. Lots of weight loss, but still very nice interior and better seats. `190 different parts on a Z than an SS - so lots of changes. 1,801 Z's made start to finish including MFG. CTF cars, so they are few and far between, so if you keep long term better value proposition. Hard to beat NA LS7 for power and with cam, exhaust, intake, TB and tune you can get 100 + RWHP added along with more torque.

Z/28 had 1 factory option - AC - which also came with 6 speaker stereo. W/O AC you get 1 speaker in door, with same stereo (needed the 1 speaker to meet fed regs for beep). Accessories were rear wing wickerbill, matts, gas tank lid etc... All dealer installed.

I have the Z/28 and as far as pure driving experience and pleasure goes it is one of my favorite cars all time. I just love it everytime I get in it. I don't miss the creature comforts or mind the crappy stereo once I am underway, because how it drives never disappoints.

Both offer incredible performance for the $. Both will leave a smile on your face. You get to choose which route to take - enjoy the hunt and good luck with your decision.

Attached are few pieces on the Z to give you some more information

That's solid savings.

I strongly suggest getting a quote from National Corvette Museum Insurance, (NCM), they always seem to have the best rates on late model year cars.

Yes, it has a camshaft.

No, the stock cam is not radical, but it provides a subtle lope.

The LS7's stock cam has an lsa of ~120.
