Did I say anywhere that I opposed enhanced sound? I don't think I did...

Not trying to get in an argument here. I believe I even asked if you opposed such measures because I didn't know your position on the subject.

I like to keep an open mind on this until I hear it for myself...
Mechanical enhancement I have no problem with, I am not sure about electronic enhancement though.

I'd imagine it all boils down to how well its executed. We've all heard really bad exhaust choices.

If it's done well, I haven't heard any consumer complains only reviewers looking for clicks, then it'll be fine.

enhanced/fake sound in an automobile is the dumbest thing I have ever heard its the equivalent of your partner faking an orgasm in bed...but whatever floats your boat.

So how about this one.

I heard a demonstration of technology used on a 4 cylinder Solstice that made it sound like raucous V8. But it was mechanical through the intake and used reed valve concept kind of like a wind instrument.

So it was not "fake" as in electronically piped in through speakers but more in line with what people on this site do with their exhaust and intake to make their car sound louder, deeper or whatever their preference is. We all know no 2 exhausts are the same.

Oh and it sounded pretty good.

To the guy/gal stomping on the pedal, yes.

My understanding is that newer engines are inherently more quiet due to their improvements in efficiency (not just in gas mileage, but in the way they actually operate). Automakers take measures to boost the sound so it reminds people of the older models.

Of course, if it bothers you that much you could always get a set of Flowmasters...

I have the baffles in my Boss 302's side exit exhaust opened up to 7/8" and always drive with the window cracked open even in winter just to hear it. As someone else already pointed out, with all the sound insulation in a modern car, some system to pipe in sound from the engine may be needed to still enjoy the sound from the engine.

GM may end up doing the same thing in the future on specific models to enhance the experience behind the wheel. It won't sway me one way or the other on buying any particular car. One downside to changing mufflers is that it will always be loud, or not sound like you want. Artificial sound plumbing that would allow you to turn it down or off would seem to offer the best of both worlds.

My wife does not appreciate the sound of my Boss as much as I do, and she would probably love for it to be Town Car quiet when motoring down the highway on a long drive.

I have a feeling every manufacturer that produces a V8 is going to do this, especially with CAFE standards. (going smaller motor)

I was at Laguna Seca on saturday helping my bro race his shifter kart and there was a 10 min session with electric karts. If you're a die hard nascar guy, imagine before the race they ran electric nascars. Sadly this might be the future. Maybe not for nascar but for other automotive sports.

We had a guy here at Summit Point do a demonstration lap of his electric race car, basically a converted Spec Racer Ford. It was almost mind numbingly boring watching the thing. Other than tire squeal, there was no sound at all coming from the track or car. Very boring to watch. Driving it on the other hand was very fun! Without engine noise you could focus much more on the interaction between the tires and track surface.

Still doesn't change the experience from a fan perspective though.

My DD is a Nissan Leaf. It emits a whistle when rolling because it's silent otherwise. It would be nice to have an option like this.
