Radar detector, Hmmmm?
Haven't thought about them in quite some time.
Last time was about 10 years back and the one to have was "ESCORT, or VALINTINE. Anybody using one these days? Brand, price, performance? WC |

I am using a Cobra that I had purchased when I had my '13 Mustang GT , so I don't quite remember the cost . It has a GPS dongle attached to it which shows me my current speed as well as photo enforcment etc. . It has saved my a ticket numerous times .

Issue with many cheaper Detectors is the endless false K band signals from BSM (Blind Spot Monitoring) which many newer cars now have - it can drive you crazy with false signals. Other issues are commercial door openers, cell towers, etc. Some of the newer high quality detectors have developed firmware in an attempt to weed the BSM signals out. My older Escort has GPS and memory location which remembers false signal locations and blocks them, but I really only use it anymore on the highway otherwise in heavier traffic the false signals are endless. Best IMO are Escort Redline or Valentine.

Please strongly consider what hesster said. The false signals are making their usefulness questionable.
I found myself on a long highway trip recently and got a Cobra RAD 480i Radar and Laser Detector because that is what was available. It's about $150 if you don't need to buy it at the truckstop, there it costs more. The biggest problem is the false alerts. I had to turn down the sensitivity and still 9 out of 10 were false alerts. If the vehicle spewing radar was going in your direction near you it might beep for 20min straight. The gps marking of towers or automatic doors might be enough for a few but for most of us on a highway trip wanting to double check our speed in case the mph dropped down from e.g. 75 to 55 zone these things can be useless. |

Another thing to consider is that if you mount a detector on the dash where it's easy to reach, it's likely to mess with the tpms on the camaro. My tpms will always have dropouts after 20 or 30 minutes of driving with the detector plugged in. After a dropout, if I unplug it, the tire pressure reading comes back within like 10 seconds. I've experimented and been able to turn the tpms issue on amd off with the radar detector enough times to know with 100% certainty that it's the cause.

Uniden R3. I'm very happy with it. It's a lot cheaper at other sites than uniden.
