Question Considering Purchasing 5th Gen Camaro SS

Hello all,

I am a new member to this forum and I have been a long time 1st and 4th generation Camaro owner. I am seriously considering selling my 1999 Z/28 and moving into a 5th generation Camaro SS. I want to buy a low mileage 6 speed car that's pretty much stock. I plan to mod the car over time with exhaust, intake, cam and a few appearance items as the budget allows. This will not be a daily driver, just a fun weekend car. My main question is, what should I look for when shopping for these cars? Are there any quirks that cause problems that I need to avoid like the plague? Are there significant differences in optional equipment on a car from 2010-2013 that I should be aware of?

2013 - all the toys, all the bugs ironed out. Better looking than the 2014 refresh. I could be biased though...

They're all 6 speeds. Do you want a manual or auto?

I got a ‘14 and agree...the 13 is best, unless U can’t live without the heat exchanger. Oh and 6sp for sure. I’m a family guy, had to get auto ‘cause of my daughter...she’s not a shifter.

My ride is a 2-SS/RS...fully loaded except sunroof.
Either way, you can’t go wrong with any G5 SS
Best of luck
Edit: Post some pics of your ‘99...we love Camaros and you may find an enthusiast amongst us looking to buy

I'd go with whatever you find the best deal on with low mileage. What they say is true about the 13's but I haven't had problems with my 11. I don't like the 14 style myself. I stayed away from 2010's just because they were the first model year

welcome to the forum!

I have a 2010 manual with 130k miles. Bought it 6 months ago with no history of any problems. I cammed it, put long tubes on it, did a 3.91 gear swap and its a beast and still very reliable.

If you plan to mod it like you say, you'll have the opportunity to address known weak spots like the timing chain tensioner. If you are going with the 6 speed auto, you'll have the opportunity to remove AFM/DOD when you do the cam (keep VVT though). If you go with 6 speed manual, then you'll want to beef up the drive line and suspension to keep from breaking parts if you drag race it.

Have fun with it!!!

I believe the manual (LS3) is cheaper and easier for cam upgrades than the auto L99. Most people really like the factory NPP exhaust option (small, free flowing mufflers with factory cutouts). Sounds great with catless long tubes! You never really hear about people upgrading that exhaust from the axle back. I agree with the other comments about the looks of the 10'-13' Camaros.

Good luck and welcome to the forum,
Jason

I agree except for the cheapo plastic hood ornament. Crapiest thing I ever seen on a GM hood! If they would have made it out of aluminum or even pot metal it would be cool. But thin cheap plastic??????????????

Thanks for the answers. Forgive my ignorance, but what bells and whistles does a 2013 have that the others don't? Was IOM a color in 2013? That's what I'm leaning towards most at the moment.
