You forgot inferior performance, but yeah, +10000 this.
They are nice cars, and fun to drive, but you *really* need to look into maintenance costs as you won't be getting it new, you'll be getting it when it's starting to break down. Also the interior of the 2SS will be a lot nicer / up to date / tech toys than that M3.

Do you change your own oil and do your own simple maintenance?
You can't do that on any new BMW. --kC |

Absolutely gutless at lower rpm. Max torque is only 295 lb-ft. So unless you plan to wind it out to reline all the time its like driving a V6 with the sound of a V8. They do sound good though.

If he is looking at an E92, then he is going used. So the maintenance is definitely an issue, the interior isn't very good for the cost of that car new.

It's not really you, but people in general who say "oh how impossible it is to do maintenance on German cars". My friend has a 10 year old 3 series and he did the brakes himself no problems, and he's a respiratory therapist - not a mechanic. I wonder if the new Camaro even has a dipstick - don't really need one as you can see. |

I owned 5 Bimmers including an M3 before my Mustang. I'd never go back to BMW. They aren't the drivers cars they once were nor good value. If you like the looks of the new Camaro it's hard to beat in performance or value.

Sorry and no offense but I had to laugh when I see this because the price of maintenance is peanuts over the life of the car compared to the $20,000+ you have to pay for the M3/M4!!!! That pays for a weekend at Boundarant race school plus years of track time or a fully equipped garage. I get your point, we are both on the same page.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming M2? That's more of a driver's car.

Obviously I haven't driven it, but I did drive a 228i with the M Package and I would have racked up a lot of points on my licence with that, so the M235 and new M2 must be brilliant. But the pricing is such that I'd have a hard time justifying spending that much on such a small car. The 3 series coupe has an amazingly spacious rear seat area by comparison and I have kids, so no M2 for me. After a certain price point I'm no longer looking at a third car, but instead a replacement for an existing one. However, if it was cheaper, or I had no kids I'd seriously consider it.
