nova z/28

never heard of it, was it real. was watching top gear and they mintioned a nova racing a porsche with a viper. the nova said z/28 on the car/ my question was, was it a real car?

No, The Nova Z/28 was custom made by a shop for the SEMA show several years ago. It is running an authentic DZ302 motor though. It was more of a "What IF" build. It's a neat car and has been featured in Super Chevy and Hot Rod magazines.

Lol, post #2 is on it. Pure Vision built it for SEMA. Like he said it was a "what if" car... What if there was no Camaro and the Nova was left to fill the gap? The Camaro is loosly based on the 66 Chevy II (became the Nova) anyhow. What if they made a Z28 (since it's really just an RPO code not a seperate "model" per se) Nova??

The 67 Nova was on the old platform, 68 was the first year for the Nova to share the 67 Camaro subframe platform. The two continued to share through the end of the Nova's lifespan. The first gen was a rear steer, but in mid 70 GM switched it to a front steer. The car in question was a what if as stated and personally I wish the DZ 302 could have found it's original body if at all possible but was pretty cool nonetheless.

They came very close...the '70 COPO Nova, LT-1 engined (then the Z/28 engine), which was the basis for the '70 Yenko Nova. Others besides Yenko ordered them, as well, but very limited production.

Which by the way is a 300 hp 350 engine that turned in a 13.00. The 396 Nova's were in the mid to low 12's with no mods except a set of slicks. The old street tires of that day were what kept the ET's a lot slower.

1970 LT-1 = 360 hp, both Camaro and Nova. 11.1, solid cam, 2.02s, aluminum hi-rise, Holley. The silver Nova in the video is owned by Pete Simpson of Glencoe ON., and is a genuine COPO non-Yenko. This car competes in the Pure Stock Drags with 4.10s, on belted street tires, not slicks.

My brother's '69 L78 Nova barely squeaked into the 13's (13.85 IIRC), stock, on its redline E-70s. He bought it brand new.

When the original '68 COPO Nova (L78/M40) was launched, it ran in A/SA (Stock, NHRA)(or SS/CA-Super Stock). The man to beat, in that Class? Pete Simpson's "neighbor", John Elliot of Chatham ON in his '67 Comet 427/410 hp. Class record, by '68, was 12.16...with a Barrie Poole build and the best parts Ford of Canada could supply...

Ooops, I meant to type 370 hp. When I was drag racing, a guy from our town used to take his all stock 1968 Nova SS 396/375 hp car to the strip and ran 12.30's all day long with only a good set of drag slicks...oh wait now that I think about it he had headers on it as well, so not a true bone stock car.

370 was the Vette rating...360 for Nova and Z/28.

If that was, in fact, a stone-stock L78 your friend raced with headers and slicks-only as upgrades, he got the BEST L78 Tonawanda ever built... As the '68 story, above, points out, a lot of 'em were converted to 427s and even 454s under warranty, if you knew the right folks. And, with the 5/50 powertrain warranty in place back then, a LOT of 'em "got blow'd up" and replaced.

What year did this happen?

BTW, the Poole/Elliot Comet was also slicks/headers-equipped...blueprinted and balanced...4.86 Detroit Locker...hand-selected pistons/rods/valvetrain/heads/block...the very best stock pieces Ford sent 'em, and they sent a lot of stuff to Chatham, as Barrie Poole was the "Bill Jenkins" of Canadian Ford Racing...the go-to guy for Ford engine development.

I don't know all the details about the guys 68 Nova only that he had told me it was a stock 68 SS 396/375 hp car with slicks. A buddy of mine had a 72 Nova with a built small block, gears, etc that was no longer a street car and they used to run low 12's. The 68 guy may have had more done to it than he claimed...I mean I know when I was racing I wasn't really open about what all I had in my 69 Camaro either. Most of the time I just said..."Oh, it's just a small block". This was back in the late 80's and early 90's. The guy with the 68 did buy his brand new and was the only owner of that car. As far as I know, he still owns it and drives it on sunny days. Sorry for the off topic OP. Back to the Z28 Nova...that is a really cool car. Looks like they did full suspension on it as well and it handles as well as it looks.
