Failed Oil Pump

Well Im new here and just wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has heard of someone having the same issue with their new camaros. So i bought my new 2016 2SS M6 on jan. 27th, had it for 1 week in which time i drove from Dallas, TX to north western Arkansas and back. Never Let the engine go above 4.5k RPMs no hot rodding except for once i opened it up on the highway to see how it handled. Love the car, the design, everything. Well after one week and 1000 miles i was driving back from a grocery store when the "Low oil pressure light came on" i instantly pulled it over called a tow truck and had it towed back to the dealership. Checked the oil level and it was perfect, did not smell burnt or have any signs of trouble, looked like brand new oil. Well the car was at the dealership for 3 days when i got a call saying they had ran the car for about five minutes and had seized up the motor, which is surprising considering i told them low oil pressure, oil level is fine and that it seemed the pump was not working. so.......now they are pulling the engine to see exactly what happened and reading the "black box" to see how it was driven. I just cant believe after only a 1000 miles of actually fairly easy driving that this could have happened......anyways devastated but plus side is im getting a brand new engine, hopefully that has no defects.

Dont think ts been reported here so far, seems at this point to be a defective part. It also is not something that's been discussed in quantity on the Corvette forums for the last three years with the LT1 engine.Remember you now have another break in to do!

Yeah, that's the first thing I'd do if I knew it had low oil pressure: start it and let it run for a while and see if anything siezes up! Wow.

unfortunately i have to restart the break in process, which was the point of my weekend trip. At least GM will be aware that the issue is out there, and i work a rotational schedule out of town so luckily it happened 2 days before i had to go back to work, so when I get back it should be ready to go.

Well, those are some D****** technicians. Oil looks good, oil level is fine, start it up, low oil pressure warning comes up, lets just run it for a while and see if the oil pump starts working. Maybe the pump lost the WiFi signal. You better find a new dealer.
Sorry to hear this, hope the new motor lasts longer.

Ya, after hearing that from the Service Writer my heart sank. I had such good service when buying the car i thought i would see how the service department was. Although when i asked them about proper break in procedure when buying the new car, one of the service rep said to me these new engines dont require any break in period and just drive it like i stole it......now looking back that should have sent a red flag right away about them. Also MGD like the color scheme on your car, was looking for the same twin stripe theme but ended up falling in love at first sight with my car

I wonder why GM put that in the owner manual. Make a copy of the page 200 in the manual and show it to the dealer.

I would rather have a new engine. Who knows what that pump was doing if it was defective. You score the bearings and u might not know for a long time

After the initial shock of having my 1 week old cars motor seized, i kind of am glad that they seized the engine due to any metal shavings that happened and hey im gonna get fresh tranny fluid to boot

So the 5th gen was and still is notorious for failing oil pumps. Let's hope it has not carried over into the new generation.

This came out a week ago...

#PIP5374- Loss Of Oil Pressure On LT1 Camaro Only - (Feb 8, 2016).pdf

You can check for the raised lettering without getting underneath. All you have to do is open the hood and feel behind the pulley. Assuming you don't have very fat fingers you will be able to feel the area where the raised marking would be. My oil pan does not have the markings. It was built 12/15.

Wow, that really sucks. I'm getting ready to get my oil out at 800 miles. We'll see if all is good. Your the first I've heard with a failed oil pump
