custom intake

Has anyone on the forum created their own intake?
I have had several cars where i just attach a 3inch pipe and a filter to the motor (drill a couple holes for the sensors). I have done this on 89, 02 and 04 model year cars, but never on a 2014. Has anyone done something like this on the Camaro?
While on the topic of intakes...is CAI really worth the extra 50% it costs over k&n performance wise? Or is that extra money really only because it is prettier?

I understand the Spectre has options for custom setups.

problem with the K&N is that its box does not seal well allowing hot air to get to the filter as well as having a metal tube that will also get hot (they also have a plastic tube model but same seal problems). the rotofab and CAI intakes are really the best ones out there. I personally have the CAI unit.

if you are just going to run a pipe with a filter on the end of it you will just suck in hot air which will not give you any performance increase.

I added the air scoop with my K&N Typhoon intake and it doesn't have the same heat issue that it had before.

I am sure a few have made there own but the reason you'll have a hard time hearing about it is because unless you fabricate a cold air box preferable with scoop your not going to gain any performance. stay away from the K&N I have it now and just ordered a AIRAID for my car...there are betters out there but until in slap on my SC it will work fine.

here is whats wrong with the K&N see pic... my tube is not metal its plastic but my at idle/stoplight temps are at least 40 to 50 degrees higher than ambient and thats in the winter 40 to 50 degree outside temps.

Whatever intake you decide on, definitely get the air scoop... it makes an enormous difference.

The typhoon isn't metal either (or at least it's not anymore). It's just painted with a chromey color.

Yeah ender, that's the Apex scoop right there. ^

Some of the guys use other scoops... but I'm pretty sure they're SS guys.

DSX-
So you had the same experience as KillerSS with your intake in that it was running alot hotter, but once you got the scoop it eliminated that and in your opinion is a good intake?

I installed an Injen short ram. Main reason I added it was to help it breath better and a little bit of it was the added HP and last reason was it does improve looks under the hood. If you don't want to spend the money on a CAI but you just want to improve the air flow just add the K&N filter to your stock intake.

They don't have an intake for the 2014 yet. However they are local to me, so I offered my car to them if they need to test the fitting.
