I work for Apple (20), been working for them for 2 years. They are the sole reason I own my camaro!

And I'm a part-time student.

Thanks! Not trying to brag or anything, but I think NOT going to college helped me... As opposed to going to college, I stayed at home and leased a server and started a hosting company, Linux shared hosting, then Linux VPS, then Dedicated. WHen I interviewed, they said they would take someone that took the ambition to learn it like that, as opposed to someone that would pay to have someone tell them what to learn.

All my friends that are in IT that took the college route, are stuck in tech support, or bartending, making 40k a year, and im here making well into 6 figures salary at just 26. LOVIN LIFE! lol

I wouldn't call myself a Linux nut though I'm moderately comfortable with a CLI.

To the OP (even though this is a three year old thread), I've been in IT for 27 years and while not every second has been pleasurable, I've loved every minute of it! The secret to success is to do something you love to do. That way, even if you're not having a wonderful day, you're still enjoying what you do.

I learned my job in the Air Force. I figured it was a decent trade, I gave them 4 years of my life, they taught me a trade I could use for the rest of my life. I make considerably more now than I did when I was in the Air Force and it's allowed me to get the things I want, which currently include my Camaro.
CLI and Bash scripting is where its at! You cant be a real Linux Admin/Engineer without being fluent.

Check out some cool posts on my site, www.linuxdigest.org, my username is J

We used to use a Squid proxy server where, as with most things Linux (though Squid isn't just available on Linux), all configurations were done with text files. Our support desk folks didn't have any Linux training at all (heck, most didn't know what a DOS prompt was either) so I put together a set of Bash scripts that allowed them to add/remove users from the configuration including some rather involved areas where we allowed users by destination domain rather than full access. Did it in ncurses for the graphical presentation. Had to give it up when we bought Bluecoat appliances.

Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread.

Nice man, I do a lot of perl mostly, but I do some Powershell for Windows.

Here are some of my old ass example scripts.

29, working as a machine operator for a plant and soon to be car detail as a second job. Also going to school again part time to become a software developer. Bought this car to keep my mind from going insane with being so busy hehe. Not regretting this decision one bit.

No career. My own abilities and skills and experiences did it.
