2010 ABM 2SS Stolen in San Jose
All,
Sad to report that my ABM 2010 2SS Camaro was stolen this morning from my home here in San Jose. Captured on video. Two guys in hoodies, got into the car, popped the hood, did something and was able to start it and drive off with it. Seriously sucks rocks. I thought the cars were a bit more difficult to steal if you didn't have the chipped key on you. Dean

Dang, sorry to hear that. How long did the theft process take? I've never heard of fiddling under the hood to start it. Did you have the OnStar active by chance to track it down?

I think there are about 10 others in your shoes over the last few weeks... i think someone on here mentioned that they they get in, pop the hood, plug a hacked module or something in and they just drive off after disabling the on star unit. all in about 3-4 minutes or something like that..
i think people are starting to look into other security measures such as 3rd party tracking devices and such.. might be worth looking into a kill switch that isn't super easily accessible.

Because of all these issues with car safety, whenever I see SS parked on the street, I always wonder what they use to secure their car. How has it not been stolen yet.
Especially the ones in Oakland. This is crazy. |

Terrible News, over here in Florida we had a strong of burglaries of SS's as well. Apparently these guys were following people home, carjacking at gunpoint, and taking the car to a chop shop ONLY to remove the engine and trash the rest. Hopefully there is information somewhere about how these people are using the hacked module or whatever it is, to steal the cars. Hope your car is found safe and sound.

I assume they had a hacked ECU or something to bypass what is in the car to get it started. Really sad day. After the 7 years I have owned it, there was literally a little bit of the new car smell in it still. Not even a scratch on the car.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Really unfortunate how often that is happening up in NorCal in particular as of late.

They popped the hood on mine as well when they attempted to take it. I wonder if you had a separate mechanism to open the hood that was hidden, if it would slow them down enough they wouldn't risk the wait?

I believe the pop the hood to disable the horn so when the alarm sounds, there is no sound. Then they get in, disable OnStar, plug into the diagnostic port, start the car and drive off. All the cars systems are accessible through that port.
A few months ago I watched a Vice documentary about the epidemic of auto theft in the United States. They shows a device about the size of a tablet that can plug into the diagnostic port to be able access anything the thief wanted to. bilydean, where in San Jose was it stolen? I'm from San Jose as well. A white one was also stolen north of us this weekend. And a black one was stole a couple weeks ago. It was found stripped in Oakland with the words "About my Cash!!!" spray painted all over it. http://stolen911.com/stolen/stolen-g...d-major-parts/ http://stolen911.com/stolen/seeking-...ered-stripped/ http://stolen911.com/stolen/2014-cam...-seeking-info/ http://stolen911.com/stolen/stolen-c...pped-richmond/ http://stolen911.com/stolen/informat...hefts-oakland/ https://www.facebook.com/ACRATT/phot...type=3&theater |

I'd love nothing more that these people to be caught and punished. Some good old street justice would work for me. But it's going to be very difficult to the local police departments to catch these guys since this is happening all over the Bay Area spanning dozens of cities and counties. Hell, one was stolen in Walnut Creek then the next day one was stolen 50 miles south in San Jose.
The thieves seem to be getting bolder as well. They're now painting messages on cars taunting law enforcement and taking cars during the day in front of witnesses.

Don't even for a second think Onstar will be of any use. It is disabled immediately, and the car driven away. GM really screwed up on the module location. It should have been burried in the car better. Probably a 30 second disable by the passenger.
