DIY: Disable 2013 HSA (Hill Start Assist)

Like many of the 2013 manual-transmission owners, I have found HSA to be a nuisance that interferes with the smooth operation of the vehicle. Unlike Hill-Assist implementations in other cars, which can be turned on or off, there is no way to disable this feature on the Camaro without modification to the vehicle.

My method of disabling HSA, was to replace the Yaw-Sensor, with the part number used for the Automatic Camaros. This sensor does not have the longitudinal-accelerometer that triggers HSA. After installation, the car had no warning lights or warning messages. HSA no longer activates, nor does the Hill Start message ever appear.

Special thanks to MPHS_AGM for some key-info on HSA functionality, and to OzzySS for specifics on the sensor location. Also thanks to jtzako for his guide on PDIM + USB Port installation, as I followed this guide for center console disassembly.

Parts Used

GM Part# 13578326 - Yaw Sensor without Longitudinal Accelerometer




Tools Used

• 7mm Socket
• 10mm Socket
• Phillips Screwdriver
• Small Flathead Screwdriver

Step 1 - Remove the center Console

As mentioned, I followed jtzako's excellent guide for removing the center console. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77662
Removal is the same for manual-equipped Camaros.

Step 2 - Remove and Replace the Yaw-Sensor

Once the console is removed, the yaw-sensor can be located to the left of the emergency-brake. Simply remove and replace this unit with GM Part# 13578326 using a 10mm socket.



Put everything back together, and you're done. No more Hill-Nanny!

Good question. If the orientation of the sensor still includes the "yaw" aspect of the three directional movements (pitch, roll, yaw), then I'd think all is well. The notation of it not having longitudinal sensor indicates the "pitch" movement is absent which would correlate to the concept of the nose facing up or down a hill. Therefore, the stabilitrack function, which I think is principally a yaw motion protection, should be ok. Someone with the mod should find a big wide open parking lot on a wet day and try to drift the back end to see if the stabilitrack control kicks in.

Me, I'm keeping the HSA as it seems to work perfectly for me on all the hills around Austin...

It works in an automatic car. I would expect it to work in this case since it's just replacing the M6 yaw sensor with one from an A6,

Thanks for the props! I have been off the boards for a while and glad to see that there was some progress made on disabling HSA. Do you know if the automatic sensor needs to be calibrated? There is a section in the manual about calibrating the yaw sensor and I can't recall if it was only for the HSA function. I will reread the sections and see what I can come up with. Keep us posted on any changes to the traction control system.

Instead of an automatic YAW sensor, can someone use one from a 2010-2012 Manual? Or is the part number/sensor the same?

Awesome!! I've been working around/living with the HSA for a while now but it's nice to see someone did the homework to find a fix! Although it is sad that this has to be done instead of just disabling it. As long as no one has any glaring issues I'll be doing this myself. Thanks for the write-up!!
