Yet another Timing Chain

Hey Guys,

First off, I had written an entire paragraph but it deleted everything I wrote when I attempted to post it so now I am summarizing what I wrote.

So I had all the symptoms and was dreading facing reality but sure enough, my car has the P0008 code.

Brutal, car has 80,000km (50k miles) has been babied since June 2009 and has had full synthethic oil changes every 5k miles.

Called the dealer, was told it would be upwards of $2500 to replace the chains and was told that not a single Camaro has come in with chains and the whole old story.
I explained how the Camaro has a known issue with the chains and then discussed the TSB for the other models which had the same engine.

Well figured next step is to call GM Canada.
In a nutshell, they said that I was pretty much out of luck and it was up to the dealers discussion as to what will happen.

We all know how that would turn out.

I am truly at a loss for words. I have been an advocate for the Chevy Team and have done everything I can to treat my vehicle right. I was in the market for a new vehicle and was considering the new Camaro SS and or the Stingray, with the intention of permanently storing my 2010.

If the chains were worn down because of myself personally, then I would pipe up and pay the fee, but knowing that this is a known issue plus the thought of an engine failure in another 20k is just sad.

With you completely!
Factual Press on a large scale is the way forward I feel.
It's a documented issue.
GM needs to be accountable.
If it was Brakes, Seat Belts or Ignition* it'd be sorted by now.

I just cant find any preventative upgrade or replacement parts advice from GM to avoid this ever happening ??

On a side note, I've thrashed my Vauxhall Zafira for 280,000 miles and I have no qualms about its timing chain ... but the GM experience here is a daily worry.
Thats not customer service or good PR.

I just hit 35,000KM in my car... I hope this Code never pops up! One of the guys at work here has a 09 Equinox sport with a 3.6L and just had to do chains too.

Did he have to pay for it himself?

My car is just sitting on the driveway I really have no clue what to do.

People need to realize that even if you get the chains done...which will still go bad again...the biggest problem with thw LLT is the engine failures.

Imagine spending $2-3000 and theb having a blown motor in a year

It doesn't make any financial sense

Hey ruby thanks for the post.
You know exactly how I feel, we have been advocates for the Camaro and its nt just a car to us so for our loyalty and passion for GM, its sad that they dont seem to care.
This $2500 repair which shouldn't even be an issue on a car that has only 50k miles can be the make or break for me from ever buy another GM car.
And sure they may never care since there is always new customers but why not back a loyal customer and stand behind their product, that alone would convince me into a second camaro or a stingray

Hey Bud,

He paid for it himself.. We do a lot of Chain Jobs here.

Well if you put $3000 into it you will get more on trade in value then having a Camaro running like crap ... If you want a new car get the dealer to pay half the job and trade it in towards your new car.

Hi HPerforance,

How many are V6 Camaro ? :-)

Would you advise early replacement before shit happens?
Is so, what would the process be?

Cheers,
JamesR [UK]

Hey Bud,

Most are Camaro's, Come are CTS, Equinox...

Really nothing to do , when the time is up it just happens.

You can replace them early if you feel you will keep your car long.

I don't get this $2,500 thing. The replacement chain kit is $180, plus labor.
They do not have to pull the motor on the Camaro.

Try another dealer.

I never planned on getting rid of the Camaro, wanted to store it permanently and buy another vehicle but wanted to drive it for another year.

Thanks for the info!!

My engine is running rough now and is making noise so not sure if the Motor is still okay or not. To me it sounded bad, and the rattle sound came around 2500rpm but could not be heard at idle, as well the power was surging off and on so not sure if the guy who reset my CEL, ended up changing engine parameters and therefore caused more damage or if its just the chains making the noise.

I took it down the street, heard the noise and brought it right back and its been parked since.

From what I gather, even the new chains will go and its seems to be around the 70,000km range or 40-50k miles

This exactly was my thought process. The motor does not need to be moved, its alot of work but no where near the amount of work as the Traverse or Acadia where they have to drop the motor.

Debating doing the chains myself. I am mechanically inclined, just not sure if there are any special tools I need to get access to the chains.
