idle too low?

Just took delivery of my camaro yesterday. Loving it and still getting used to it. One thing I noticed is when i start it up and its idling the car sort of vibrates almost like it's going to stall. It is a manual transmission. Idle is around 550. Is that about right? Is it supposed to kind of shake like that?

If you like that, try camming it. My '99 SS shook the window panes on my house when it was idling in the garage.

LS3 has a split duration/lift, plus a nice lobe centerline on the camshaft. Gives it a little shake. Perferctly normal. Enjoy!

That was the first comment my wife made when she got inside. I told her to shut up, she's used to things vibrating. Her reaction?

I love the little shake now and then. it's not enough to notice unless you sit there for a good while. For me it's a reminder of the torque this thing possesses.

I love the shake but it's not the cam. The fuel injection system drops pulses to reduce idle emissions. Try raising the idle speed to 800 - sounds even meaner.

It's the cam. Never heard of dropping injector pulses? The same engine with a truck cam idles dead smooth. The LS3 gets a more performance oriented cam that gives it a little rumble and shake.

Put a nice exhaust system on it with an x pipe (LT's even better) , and it will really sound sweet.

If it's brand spanking new, it will smooth out a hair after a few break in miles. When a motor is green it may not be the smoothest. As things like the rings seat in, the computer learns all of it's adjustments... compression across the cylinders will be more consistent and it will be a touch smoother. But this cam will always have just a slight idle shake. That's what makes it scream above 6 grand.

I know Victory motorcycles drop injector pulses to make them try to sound like a Harley, but never heard of a Chevy V-8 doing that.

Dodge also drops idle injector pulses at idle on the Charger and Challenger Hemis. Idle emissions are measured by volume (parts per million). So, with all cylinders pumping air then dropping random fuel pulses the bad combustion gases go down.
