Why did GM use Goodyear tires instead of Michelin?

Does anyone know the real answer to this? Is it as simple as contracts?

Michelin's dry rot/ weather crack so bad I wouldn't want them on anything I own, i'm a technician at a dealership and see this everyday.

I don't have the answer, but I have always like the Goodyear performance tires better than Michelin.

Michelins tend to have softer sidewalls and the Goodyears always have stiff sidewalls. Makes a huge difference in initial turn-in and crispness. I loved the quick/sharp turn-in my old C5 Z06 and C6 GS had when they were on the Supercar tires.

Michelins also (because of their soft sidewalls) tend to lose the outer edge long before the rest of tire is done as well.

Every car I have had that came with the PS2's, I replaced with Advan Neo AD08r or Bridestone RE-11, RE71r

They perform as well as/better than Michelins, lower cost.

Coming off the Goodyear Cup3's for my ZL1, you couldn't get me to go back to those for anything but pure track use....they were absolutely terrible on the street.

Now my Michelin PS4S? Night and day vs. those Goodyear.....

I'm right there with you.

I put HRE FF04 wheels wrapped in PS4Ss on my ZL1 back in November. They're head and above a superior street tire compared to the OEM GYs IMO.

I too put the PS4S on mine when it was time to replace the tires. I have not had it on the track so really do not know how they would hold up to the constant abuse, but for street and very aggressive road driving (Ozarks, Hill Country in Texas i.e. Twisted Sisters) they are simply fantastic. And the difference in the rain is more than I can adequately put into words. Not even in the same league.... the PS4S is just astronomically better. And a 15,000 mile tread wear warranty on top of that.

Oh, and I am pushing 755whp and 775wtq on 93, the Michelins handle the power much better than the GY's did. It will still spin the tires at rather elevated speeds, but still much better than the GY did.

Most of the new hot cars come with Michelin. So why Goodyear? Maybe Lebron can answer.

But yet, I have never seen a issue with a Michelin blowing out because of this. For a street tire, Michelin is always my go to tire.

The story is the Camaro team went to Michelin first and Michelin said to eff off they weren’t designing a tire for a Camaro.
