Forged bottom end - what do I need?
Hello all,
I'm new to the world of forced induction and I just bought a Huron single turbo kit with a Precision P7675 Gen2 cea. I'm hoping for 850+ whp at 15-20 psi. From what I've read and understand it's worthwhile to invest in a forged bottom end for longevity and reliability but I'm not really sure what specs I should go with as it's all new to me. Maybe I should go with a stroker setup? The main thing I need is to know what sort of specs (bore, stroke, rod length, etc) I should be going for. Any recommendations on brands, types of setups and or any other various advice is much appreciated too. Current setup: Stock LS3 block and bottom end Melling high volume oil pump TSP stage 3 3-bolt camshaft for forced induction Billet rollmaster timing gear and chain LS7 lifters Hardened pushrods Upgraded rocker arm trunions Ported LS3 heads with springs rated to 0.660" lift Everything else is either irrelevant or coming off with the addition of the turbo Thanks for reading. i'd buy a tsp or equivalent forged gen 4 short block, iron holds more power 100lb's more in the front of the car. They have resleeved aluminum stuff but that gets pricey. I would do a 6.0 stock bore stroke forged lq4/9, sell the sbe ls3 short block, use the ls3 heads you have already some work in....this is actually what i want to do LOL!

Go with a thompson shortblock. I had a tsp and unless you have a popular youtube channel their customer service is the worst.

For what you are doing you could just go with rods and pistons from Tick.

I doubt you'll make 850 with the single kit. The downpipe will be the limiting factor.

or if you're on a budget, just buy a good set of pistons and rods. Use the stock block and crank. Take it all to your local machine shop for balancing. Should be good for 1000whp. Lots of people doing that.

15-20 lbs is a huge range. When you get up into pressures in the teens and above, every lb boost increase is next level engine foundation strength needed.
Example.... look at OE engines with R&D behind them. What does it take to make a B15 crate engine survive validation testing at 15 lbs of boost... iron LSX block, 6 bolt heads, 8 bolt crank flange, priority main oiling.... That's over and above just "forged bottom end". What would it take to survive 20 Lbs... ? the next level, in my opinion. Aftermarket block, monster head studs, and a builder that's done it successfully before. If you are just considering "forged bottom end" ... and not going 6 head bolt iron block, big head studs, priority main oiling... I'd reconsider that lofty goal of 15-20 lbs. maybe more down toward the lower teens. People are doing it, and will it last are two different things. Stock head bolts, small dia head studs can only take so much boost before the heads start lifting. Someone that can make a couple passes with huge boost is different from several hundred passes with minimal maintenance. 1000 crank hp on a stock block, stock heads? Might make a few passes. |
