Oil Filter Wrench

For you guys with headers, what oil filter wrench are you using? I'm going to be needing a new one. The one I have barely fits with the headers and is probably about to break. I use Wix Filters too if that makes a difference. Just curious!

I use one of those crappy metal ones that fit over the end of the filter that you turn with a socket wrench. I don't suggest you use them because they are garbage and eventually stretch, just spinning on the filter.

But since you asked.

Imo... if you need a wrench to remove it then you put it on too tight...

I like to use the cap wrench, but I follow the instructions on the filter to go only 3/4 turn when installing.

If' you're deforming the wrench, you are over-torquing.

I use the K&N filter with the hex head on the end.

I use a screw driver... no joke. I use the screw driver and a hammer to gently knock a hole in bottom of the side of the filter and let it drain. Once it drains just slide the screw driver in the hole and you can leverage the filter loose. I started doing it this way because the dealer I bought the car from spilled oil all over the exhaust when they changed the oil. Took about 2500 miles for the smell to go away completely. It would come and go depending on how spirited my driving was. I read several threads similar to my issue on here. I’ve changed the oil 2 times now on my own and no oil smell at all.

If I installed it in the first place, I usually don't have a problem taking it off just with my hands if I have good leverage. I think applying a light coat of oil on the gasket before you put it on helps with this.

Yeah, probably. Sometimes I get OCD about stupid stuff when clearly the industry knows better than me on this.

I have always been paranoid about the filter eventually vibrating loose. Although it has never happened to me and I don't know anyone that it has happened to. But I am not going apesh*t on it. Just hand tightened...and then probably snugged a little more.

Usually I am able to. Just since I put the headers on, I can't get my hands in there enough to get a grip.

Thats what I have been looking at, but wasn't sure how well they worked and if they slip often. Thanks!

Wow, never thought of that.

Yeah I do that too. Just after I put the headers on, it has got a little more tight in there and can't get in there enough to really even tighten it or take it off.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

That is exactly what I use, but I never go past the recommended amount of turning from gasket contact to fully tight.

While some filters have a fine enough thread to call for 1 full turn, the PF48 is coarser and so the requirement is 3/4 turn. For me, it's hard to do this reliably by hand if I'm lying on my back with the car up on ramps. I can either see the filter or be in a position to turn the filter, but not both at the same time.

So I use the cap wrench. I align the ratchet handle with a reference on the chassis and turn it 270 degree. That is snug but never a problem getting the filter off.

I can't imagine deforming one of these cap wrenches. I have three sizes for various cars, and they are all at least 25 years old.
