Help me get an extra few horsepower
My local shop is hosting a dyno day at the end of October and made a bet with my friend that I'll make 500rwhp or more. When my car was first tuned with the cam back in April it made 498rwhp on a cool morning. I had my valve springs and retainers swapped out last week and we put it on the dyno and it made 489, but this was after the car was taken for a test drive and had been idling for 15 minutes before it made a pull on the dyno. It was also over 100 degrees outside.
I know these numbers are so close to each other and don't mean much but this is just for a bet between two friends. What are a few little tips to get an extra few horsepower. 1. Should my car be cool? Warmed up for a few minutes? 2. Should I put in Chevron 91 octane and put in some octane booster? 3. Put in some unleaded race gas? 100, 101 octane? I'm going to talk to the shop owner to see if he has any ideas also, but if you guys can help me out that'd be great. Thanks!

how about a ported throttle body? not sure if it'll result in the extra HP you're looking for, but it can't hurt, right?

Bag of ice on the intake manifold prior to getting on the dyno. Get it REALLY cold.

+1 on the VMAX ported TB if you don't have one already.

Slide the dyno operator a 20 to fudge the dyno a bit?

JET Performance Underdrive Pulley Kits 90105
JET Performance underdrive pulley kits add 10-13 HP by reducing the drag placed on the engine to drive the accessories such as the A/C, power steering, and water pump. |

If that was the case it would've been an 11.9

Underdrive pulley, ported throttle body, port your heads, intake manifold, etc. hell you're right on the cusp of 500rwhp, you might as well get a goody to put yourself over

What do you previous dyno results look like? Maybe there is something hiding in them.
Do you have a graph? When I dynoed my car I made 500.7hp from about 5000 to 6050.. It showed me I am leaving something on top, which an intake swap helped with. With the cam I have it should have peaked around 6000, not flat lined. Last edited by c5z28; 09-09-2015 at 03:39 PM. |

rotating mass makes s big differance, x2 on light weight rear tires/rims.
I know on my chevelle we picked up about 30hp by taking the belt off the front and didn't run this water pump or power steering. another thing is run it a quart low on oil, less oil for the crank to half to run through |

We need to know what you have already done to your car. Just a cam is not going to get you there. Ported throttle body doesn't give more HP. Gives better throttle response.
