im going with 54
on that note, has anyone downloaded the "photomath" app? pretty awesome. You just 'hover' your phone over the question, it snaps a picture of it, not only giving you the answer, but also the steps in getting the answer. pretty neat for checking the kids homework... |

That app sounds to me more like a way for kids to cheat their way to perfect marks while honest students get lower grades. Providing the final numerical answer should be all thats needed to show that know the correct process. Like with the question from the OP. If you give your kid 38/2(3) and they work it out like this: 36/2(3) = (36/2) x 3 = 18 x 3 = 54 and an app just spits out '54', you know with near certainty that they did things right. But if instead, they wrote this: 36/2(3) = 36/(2 x 3) = 36/6 = 6 and now check the app, which still just spits out 54 they actually have to go back and figure out where they went wrong themselves.

For me there were no calculators in elementary school. Non-graphing calculators were allowed in highschool & university. Mostly because it ate up too much time when answering questions about compound interest in math or ballistic trajectories in physics. Never any cell phones during a test. This spanned the 90s through late 2000s.

I got a TI-85 (or was it an 84?) for a little over $100 before going to university, which I never used because my laptop had Excel.
