oh wait, you paid by check?
If any are not cashed, IMMEDIATELY stop payment on them.
Also, some banks will allow you stop payment even after it has been cashed and then they go after him.
That really sux bro, that guy is a maximum douche.
Make sure to post on Angie's List, it is like Yelp but for service contractors. If he gets a bad score his business will dry up.

There's so many land mines in how NOT to hire contractors in this thread...you'll be lucky to get back half of what you paid, if anything. If you were signing off on the work saying it was completed to your satisfaction, then you may be SOL.

Good luck with this. Hope you can get some resolve.

And please post the name of the contractor so others in the area don't get hosed by that DB.

I Believe in most states consumers are protected by requiring any contractors that do business in said state nust aquire a HIC license for that state. If he is doing work without a HIC license then he is certainly working against the law. Contact your local code inspector and do a little research.

So sorry to see that I am a contractor and it's that stuff that gives us a bad name.i strive to give my clients the best product I can. Do you have a contract with this so called contractor? It would be best to contact your lawyer and your states department of consumer protection.

If there was a contract did it state anything about extra work and change orders? You might have some recourse through those if any were issued. If you'd like you can PM me I can email you a copy of the contract that I use you might be able to find something to help your situation.

Contractor Problems.....

This is an abomination. I had to stop at the fence with the screws. You never pay in full. If anything, You buy the materials and have them at your house. Pay him per day or per week for the work when it's done to your satisfactory. Unbelievable. I'm a plumber and I can do better on that fence. What a scab

I am a roofing contractor going on 25 years and we never ask for a deposit. I never really understood any contractor that's been in business for a good amount of time why they would need a deposit? They should be in good standings with local material suppliers and have there workers wages covered if they are running a good business.

Nothing wrong with asking for a deposit. There are bad customers out there too, but paying the total amount is a big no-no.You see it time and time again some one paid the "contractor" the full amount up front and then they book. A good contract protects both the contractor and the consumer, depending on the size of our projects our payment schedule can be as few as 2 or as many as 10. This allows us to better track our work and our expenses and our clients are very comfortable making their payments based on specific targets.

How about the bad customers who wont pay? Then you are out the materials and labor. You should always get a deposit to cover at least the materials.

These things are true we just try to build trust with the homeowner and ALWAYS have a good binding contract. ( And they come off as fast as they go on lol )
