ls1 oil pump

Hey everyone, first post.
Had to join just purchased a 2000 Camaro Z28 with 75,000 miles on it.
Best story in the book for buying a used car is that as soon as I got it off the trailer the oil pump went out. Now if I hadn’t seen the pressure was good before I bought it, I thought I would have gotten a lemon. It was running great loading and unloading on and off the car trailer. Next day to put it in the garage there was no oil pressure when I started it up, ran maybe 5 minutes total without pressure, rockers were noisy but no knocking or any other bad sounds.
So my question is, owning a LS1 has anyone else had the oil pump go out?
Needless to say, it is at the dealership getting fixed now but I was concerned of the oil pump longevity and what damage that might have been done to the engine.

the '97-'00 model LS1 engines had an o-ring that was notorious for failing... for the '01-'04 model LS1s, they redesigned and upgraded some parts... the LS1 pump from the '01-'02 f-bodies is the exact same one that is on the LS6 engine and is a far superior version compared to the earlier LS1 pumps.

when these oil pumps fail, you have a very short life expectency of the engine if its running hard and fast... as long as you didn't do any monster revs while the oil pressure was at 0, you should be ok... but there is always that little possibility that it did some internal damage... if they have to change the oil pump, they are going to have to remove the entire front of the engine, drop the oil pan a bit, and then swap out the pump... some places have taken to just replacing the whole engine since it almost has to come out to do the oil pump replacement, and its just a way to guarantee that the rest of the engine isn't damaged.... if this is not the case in your instance, then just keep an ear toward the engine bay and listen for any ticking up high or loud knock from the bottom end, as these are the two most common bad mojo sounds after an oil pump failure.

Heard a lot about you from Killer, nothing but good.
I am sure I could use some pointers in what works for adding horsepower and what is a waste of time and money.
Can't wait to get it back from the shop next week, even if there's snow on the ground. Just want to know how the motor is, if it's toast then I’m going to need some great insight of what to replace it with. Never have been one to leave anything stock on any of my vehicles. Just ask Killer. lol

Well, I hope it's just the oil pump and the motor itself. If the motor is gone, I guess there's nothing you can do except either rebuild or replace. If you rebuild, you can bore and stroke it...get a little extra HP out of it.

If it MUST be replaced, oh boy are there some options out there to make you immediately faster than others. It's just going to be about the $$$ though...what you have to put in it.

Don't worry, money is never an option when it comes to him... He changes combos like he changes his underwear...
