Fuel pump issue?

So... Back in the day when I still had an extended warranty I had the car at the dealer because it would run out of gas with between 1/8-1/4 tank showing and 80ish miles to empty. After fiddling around they decided to replace both the sending units in the tank. Just FYI there was another issue that wasn't fixed- when filling the car, the gage will sit at it's current level for a while then suddenly pop up to the filling level. Anyways, to the matter at hand- I had gotten so worried about running out of gas that even with the fix I rarely let the car get below 3/8 of a tank. Now comes a trip to North Carolina for their Camaro show and..... out of gas with just over 1/4 tank and 120 miles to empty showing. Here's the killer- it only took 14 gallons to fill the car and it fired up like nothing ever happened when I did. Same damn thing happened 5 miles from home with 1/4 tank and 114 miles to empty. This time I had a 2-gal gas can in the car so I poured it in and she fired back up. Then to the gas station for 12 more gallons to full (again 14 gal total). So where is my other 5 gallons of gas? Could the gages have been right to begin with but that have been the problem all along? For some reason the fuel pump/system only accessing 14-15 of the 19 gallons?

Sounds like the pickup is not located in the proper spot if you have 5 gallons in the tank and you are running out of gas.

There's no pickup per se- at least not in the right side of the tank. The pump itself is the pickup. There is however I'm told a (siphon) hose to the left side of the tank where a secondary float unit is located. I wouldn't think you'd lose access to 5 gallons if that hose became clogged or dislodged but I guess it's possible.

If your car is running out of gas and you can only pump 14 gallons in, somehow you are loosing access to 5 gallons of gas it seems.

You may want to do this to gain access and see what is going on.

Maybe someone put 5 gallons of marbles in your tank.
